Plot Summary

Leland

I'm an incubus demon who feeds off intimate energy from dreams. Normally, I choose whose dreams to enter. But suddenly, I don't have a choice -- I'm summoned. Night after night, I'm summoned. I spend time building up the confidence of the woman who summoned me, while trying to figure out what it is she needs.

There are two problems:

1. I feel an intense need to protect her; and 2. She's tight-lipped about what she needs.

Maisie

My dreams are my escape, and suddenly he frequents them. Leland quickly becomes my closest friend and dream lover. My time spent with him is magical. If only he were real. Maybe then I could choose him -- choose a better life.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 7, 2025

There are mysteries in dreams, they are the place where Leland seeks out a kind of comfort, but is never called by others. But a strange woman calls him, over and over, the connection he feels within himself. Maisie is a mystery, there is something dark around her light, choking her passions away. She calls to him, and he will answer no matter the cost.

The work is a very emotionally draining story of self-doubt, need and how we can put up walls to hide from the reality we exist in. There is a terribly sad undertone throughout much of the story, it seeps into every scene and presses upon the main characters. At the same time, when cracks appear in the sadness, to allow joy and passion to come to the surface, it’s captivating and wonderful.

More than anything, the growth in the main characters is done in a way which feels right, gives time for the answers to be found. There is a climax to this, which is shocking, but from the start when Maisie appears, there’s a sense of foreboding that you can’t shake.

Leland, the incubus of the work, has the expected physical aspects of an incubus, but he is the furthest thing from being stereotypical. He’s passionate, thoughtful, and yes his need is great, but it’s not who he is. He wants to help, to heal, to give hope and life to Maisie. It’s a very convoluted path for him to help her find herself and who she is which makes the story very much a page turner.

Where the story ends feels right for both of the characters, but at the same time there’s a feeling that something else is waiting to happen. It’s an odd thought, which really has no clear basis in what happened, but I wonder if Maisie, through the revelation that Leland reveals at the close, might become the succubus to his incubus. That’s an interesting thought left behind to consider.

Four out of five pitchforks.

A surprising story which develops well, tells of the unexpected. and gives both the characters and the plot time to be what it’s meant to. It’s not all happiness, there is darkness to overcome, but that battle within the main characters is just so enthralling a read.
