Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 22, 2023

Sandi didn’t expect what’s happened to her. Dying was the first problem, then came nothingness before being called to serve. Limbo is a place, and Sandi might have found her place in the universe, whatever being a succubus really means.

The work is a very complicated mixture of erotica, self-discovery and some very unique erotic moments that are told from the perspective of the main character Sandi who finds herself transformed into a succubus and discovering what that all means. Some moments have a theological aspect to them, which I found fascinating as they were explored.

Sandi, the succubus of the work, is rather unique and the narrative is set in a tone of voice that’s very clear. She’s not evil by any means, and I adored watching her work her way through the challenges she faced. She is a bit thin character-wise at the start but as things progress there’s a good deal of development that worked to make her transformation quite different.

There’s really very little erotica in the work and that doesn’t hurt the storytelling. There’s no question that Sandi is a succubus, and while the erotica felt a bit muted, it has a purpose which worked well. As a succubus themed story, overall the work is less about that aspect of Sandi and more about the adventure she finds herself in and where that takes her.

In the telling of the story however, the writing felt odd. It’s written in a way that felt like Sandi was speaking the events into a recorder, the result of which is strange with capitalization of full words for emphasis and other quirks. At other points events and recited in a mad rush of descriptions and reflections that tried to work but only did so here and there and not consistently.

While the story is interesting, and there is a lot going on around Sandi, the writing just makes things flow oddly and inconsistently. Another editing pass would help to make things flow better, to make the dialogue richer as well. As much as there’s a flow of consciousness from Sandi, the story is too scattered as a whole and I wish it wasn’t.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

Where the story concludes feels right and overall things feel complete at the ending. But with how things are written I think there’s something missing overall. That’s not anything specific, it’s more wanting Sandi to have explored her new self more and discover she’s more as well. If there was a second work, having that focus on Sandi sorting out herself and coming full circle would be interesting to explore.
