Encountering a woman of mystery, Derek finds himself drawn into Belinda’s orbit, soon being trapped by his own desires. When she reveled the truth, the question becomes if all she is matters less than just being with her. You never know who lurks in the night around you after all.
The work is a very short flash of a story which revolves around the main character Derek and his infatuation with Belinda and how their relationship and passions evolve. It’s written mostly as a narrative of what happens between them and how things turn when Belinda reveals she is a succubus.
While it is a short story, there’s a lot of layers to be found. The characters are quite surprising, the plot has purpose and the climax of the story fits really well with all that came before. There’s also a mythos built up which I thought offered a lot as well and tied things together nicely.
Belinda, who is the succubus of the work, is very much a temptress and delights in who she is. There’s just enough time to give her a presence in the story, a history, and reveal that she is more than a succubus alone. Her character arc and that of Derek work really well, and she’s just a delight.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It’s a shame this work was so short, more so that the author didn’t take what’s really an outline for a novel and turn it into one. Belinda is interesting and fleshing her out would be interesting by far. But this work isn’t available anymore, so what will never happen I would expect. But it would be so dearly an interesting idea.
