Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 1, 2024

Magic is a wild thing which does as it wishes regardless of one’s intentions. Mira finds that the magics have brought her to the steps of Hell and there is someone waiting for her. An incubus unashamedly greets her and offers his hand as a guide. But the heat surrounding them soon brings Mira to discover the needs of her soul and the one capable of fanning the fires.

The work is a very short hot flash which immediately brings the main characters together, sets the story on a path towards the erotic coupling, and doesn’t really stray from that focus. There is a bit of universe building around the edges, which I thought worked really well. The characters themselves are not two-dimensional nor stereotypical either. They have purpose, passion, and a need within each to find what’s missing for them both.

The tone is very much a seductive one, there’s a hint of darkness around the edges, but it takes nothing away from the heat. It’s a bit rushed from time to time, some of the dialogue feels a little odd here and there. The passion is delightful and the erotic scenes are hot without going over the top or becoming crass or off-putting.

The incubus of the work, who is never named, is more mischievous than evil by far. He is a creature of sex, there’s no question of that, but that need isn’t an evil one by any means. He’s passionate when the moment is right, demanding when the story takes that turn and on occasion becomes something of a guide for Mira to discover herself and that just made him a fascinating character.

I would have liked the incubus to have been given a name, to make a stronger connection between him and Mira. It’s a shame the story was so short, I found myself wondering what the future holds for Mira, if perhaps she becomes the succubus mate to the incubus. Tat would be an interesting twist if her nature changed to become a mirror to the incubus. There’s a lot of threads left at the end which could be picked up and perhaps someday they might well be.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

It’s a lovely hot flash, but not giving the incubus a name felt like some of the intimacy was lost. It feels like this could be turned into a larger story, and really it should be. The characters are interesting, the author writes well and seeing this work expanded into something of an epic novel would make for an engrossing work of erotica.
