Plot Summary
What if an abused house wife did more than just knit all day? With the majority of Eli's paycheck going towards gambling, it leaves very little to keep the home afloat. Living on a short leach, Vera waits on Eli hand and foot during the day, allowing him to work hard and play hard during the night shift. But once he's gone to work, only she knows what happens in the wee hours.
Book Review

Eli is an awful man, the things he does to Vera are unspeakable and terrible beyond words. But Vera has a secret, one that Eli will learn of too late for him and all the others that have become tangled in Vera’s web.
The work is a short story which carries with it a lot of evil and suffering through the main characters. There are erotic moments as well, but they are wrapped up in the darkness that consumes all of the characters as the story reaches for its climax. It’s not quite a story of horror, though there are some moments with that aspect.
What carries throughout is the abusive nature of Eli, in all of his words and actions. They make him completely unlikable, which is the point really as it explains Vera’s part of the story and why she is with him.
Vera, for the most part of the story, tells of a life that is truly an awful one. It’s when the truth is revealed, and that takes a couple of scenes to happen which have a good deal of mystery to them, that it makes sense. She is something of an emotions vampire and as well she is a succubus. Both aspects come out at the climax and close of the story which gives her nature more clearly as a scheming evil creature with one purpose and will do whatever she must to have that.
Three out of five pitchforks.
The work was a very difficult read for me at least. That’s mainly through how dark all of the characters are, there’s no hope really throughout. It’s very much a revenge story in a way that really pulls no punches. With that said, Vera is very much a mystery and a follow on story to tell more about her would be really interesting.
