Plot Summary
Romania 1989.
Across Eastern Europe repressive communist regimes are toppling like dominoes, whilst the tyrannical regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu fights to hold on to in power.
Eva Kovacs, a top geneticist and expert in cloning is missing in suspicious circumstances. Sinister photographs come into the possession of Ion Billani, a defector from the Romanian propaganda machine, through Count LeMures, an elderly, highly connected ex-patriate Romanian who appears devoid of all personal background.
Billani, now a World Service journalist, concludes that the pictures and the disappearance of Kovacs are linked and that Ceaucescu is planning something that threatens mankind and must be stopped at all costs. Despite intense scepticism and great personal risk, he agrees to re-enter Romania covertly to investigate what the regime is planning.
What he discovers takes him to the black heart of macabre plans at a secret establishment known as The Packing Station, where he discovers how modern science is being corrupted by an ancient, powerful culture.
