Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 25, 2024

There’s always someone trying to make a deal, the question is whether the deal is all that really matters. For Echo, the deal is being made by Adam, an incubus who needs something only he can provide. But is the deal really about what’s offered or is it about something else entirely?

The story is a rather complex entanglement between the two characters in the work. There’s quite a lot of lead up to the erotica itself, which is m/m focused. The heat is really very well done, but it doesn’t overcome the characters themselves. Very much story driven rather than by the erotica, it feels like it remains true to the characters and who they both seem to be.

Adam, the incubus of the work is just fascinating to me. The description of his true form, the colour of his eyes, the personality he projects are amazing. He’s the furthest thing from being stereotypical, being very unique as a whole, but what I think is the most telling is the truth that seems to shadow him and drives him to make the deal he is looking for.

Adam is just very interesting, and it would have been nice to explore his history more than it was. What’s particularly thought provoking is the little note in the story as to what happens, more often than not, to those Adam was intimate with. It’s a story within itself and Adam shading the truth of that aspect of him leaves a lot to be wondered about.

It is a rather short work, which then brings with it hints and scattered plots and ideas about the story universe that are a delight to think about and consider how things connect together. There’s an aspect of the story which Adam feels not to be connected to and taking that to the next page, to see if there is something for him as much as there is for Echo, would be something to consider as a follow on story about him.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The story is really well told, the characters are both intimate and so very present in themselves. I would have liked a bit more exploration of their relationship, the world they live in a bit more detailed. It is part of a larger series of course and a lot of that aspect of the story universe is told there. But as there are incubi, there must be succubi and I wonder about them too.
