Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on December 7, 2018
Truth is a matter of who has shared it, and what others believe in. In the world of the court, darkness shades within light, passion battles lust and choices need to be made. Some of those may be the end of everything.
The work is a fantasy adventure set in a universe in which a society of succubi and incubi exist alongside other supernatural beings. They aren’t quite what might be expected, there world is beset with rakes duty and honour, which adds a certain edge to what events unfold and their meaning as the story moves towards the climax.
The succubi and incubi in this universe, and there are a lot of them who appear, have clear voices and personalities, some quite unique, others are passing moments not really more than shadows or suggestions of who they are. Their society is so very complicated, there is nothing simple and the intrigue that surrounds everything just gets deeper and deeper with each page.
Eris, the main character of the story, is something of a contraction overall. One moment lost, the next very focused, there are points at which she seems to be two characters within one body. She is delightful however, her arc through the story takes many turns and in that she develops in an interesting way.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
The world building and characters are really well told and the story has an edge to it that is both sensual and demanding. I would have liked a bit more in the way of emotion in the dialogue and perhaps a little deeper exploration of the world of succubi and incubi themselves however.
