Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 12, 2024
This anthology is an interesting mixture of horror and devilish themes with interesting characters and the events which unfold around them. It’s not really a work of erotica, mainly focused on the darker themes overall. That said, it’s well written, the stories work well and it is a page turner throughout.
The work The Girl from Hades contains the only succubus character to be found. The focus is on the two main characters and the events that occur when a baby enters their lives in a very strange manner. Overall, the work settles it’s attention on them and doesn’t really make use of the succubus character however.
The succubus, who is never named, isn’t really details, speaks very little and is more of a threat seen. Within the story itself, she has a goal and a need for the child, which leads to conflict in which her nature appears fleetingly. There’s no erotic aspects to her, she’s an evil force doing evil overall.
As there is very little done with her, the succubus is held at arm’s length as a character which seemed like a shame. The glimpses of her nature, her actions, and the evil she does, offer ideas about her, but she’s a mystery overall.
The story ends in a way that’s a bit chilling and brings one to pause about the story and what the events became. This is a very short work of course, but given what’s told in the story, it well could be fleshed out more and made to stand on its own. Perhaps it should given the various characters barely touched on and the mythos that could be otherwise explored.
This really isn’t, however, a work focused on succubi and the single work in which one appears she’s a minor character which has really little part to play. A well written collection and for those interested in the horror genre, this work does fit well.
Three out of five pitchforks.
This rating is for the succubus story alone and the collection as a whole. While the balance of the collection held little for my particular interests, the stories work well. Overall this is an interesting series of stories that combined have a lot of depth, interesting characters, and set a consistent mood throughout.
