Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 16, 2022

Being that this work is a collection, I will be focusing on the short story The Nutcracker Suite.

Grayson finds himself enamored by Poppy, a redhead who haunts his thoughts and dreams. A offer to the theatre brings an unexpected surprise, and one that he may never escape.

The work is a seduction which slowly turns towards a strongly female dominant work of erotica. Poppy is a temptress that cannot be resisted and when she takes control things turn very much to a dominatrix theme. The erotica is very focused in the theme, Poppy has Grayson at her mercy and does as she wishes with him.

While the story has lovely heat, and Poppy is very interesting in her character and actions, the dialogue is somewhat lacking. Poppy might have been a lot more sensual in her words to match her actions. That’s not to say there aren’t some really amusing moments, there’s just not enough of the nature of a succubus coming through.

That brings the question, is Poppy a succubus? That’s very unclear within the story and overall it’s more the attitude she has of being one than perhaps actually being one. I can see her as a succubus, which would be something to explore. The hints are there, she’s every bit the seductress she would need to be after all.

But the story rushes in places, the other problem is that the fetishes don’t appeal to me very much. It’s Poppy herself that I think is just delightful, her true nature is a puzzle that interests me. Perhaps it’s less a succubus story than I’d like and enjoy fully, but overall it’s a well told seduction and entanglement which I do enjoy.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

For the collection as a whole, three out of five pitchforks.

The singular succubus story is interesting, but a bit short and rushed. Perhaps the author might consider developing the story and characters into something more than there is. I think there’s a lot of promise here it would be nice to see.
