Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 17, 2018

Samantha is running herself ragged, if it isn’t her job, it’s trying to keep up with school, family and friends. But things change, and when a new teacher appears, Sam finds herself being drawn in a direction unexpected. She’s drawn the attention of Lilith and what Lilith wants is her. But not all things are true and what lurks in the shadows brings both temptation and damnation. The question becomes, who will fall and when?

The work overall tells an interesting story with some unexpected turns which both work and don’t at times. The start is promising, the temptation and drawing of Sam towards Lilith is interesting and shows a lot of promise. There’s some good world building along the way, the appearance of supporting characters give a hint of a larger overall story.

There are a number of transformation and mind control aspects to the work which bring with them a good deal of heat. They are a bit rushed at times which was disappointing. I think the work would have been better served with Lilith’s temptations being stretched out a bit, perhaps more conflict between Lilith and Sam, a better turn of events for Sam’s friend Kim in that being more of a fall into temptation than the railroading it felt like.

The concept behind what Lilith is, how she transforms others, isn’t deeply told. It’s just touched on it passing, the explanation given just demands the rest of the story be told and it isn’t. It’s an opportunity lost along the way and it really needs to be explored.

There’s a smattering of heat in the story, just enough to suggest but not much more than that. Being that Lilith acts as temptation here, it might have been more apt in the world building to show more of what she does and who she is and how her temptation corrupts. The corruption comes, the characters change, but it’s too quick for my taste. A longer fall with more of a struggle would have meant that Lilith could have been far more seductive and less of the irresistible force she is here.

The story follows a linear path throughout much of the work, but then as the closing pages come, there’s a hard turn, which is completely unexpected. It’s jarring and doesn’t quite work well. After that moment, and the story moves on, it feels like a completely different story with completely different goals.

The work could use an editing pass to tighten the storytelling, to make the ending work better and most of all, the changes that come to the characters could be far more detailed, bringing out the horrors of what happens, but at the same time, the erotic possibilities that the transformations offer. It’s a good start, there’s a lot to like here, but not delving into things and not putting the characters into something either more dark, or more involved, it’s lacking.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

I thought the overall story idea was well done, the transformations and corruption aspects of the work told a good tale. While the beginning of the story showed promise and the work moved forward well, it took a very odd turn that didn’t quite work. The resolution made sense in its own way, but was missing something in the storytelling. I feel like this work should have been double in length, that Lilith’s temptations be more involved and draw both Samantha and Kim into peril at a more seductive speed than what came. I would also have liked at least one more editing pass to clean up a rash of misused words and odd sentence structure. The erotica could be drawn out more, just as the falling and temptations just went a bit too quick for me.

It’s a shame that the work is no longer available and the author seems to have removed all of their works from Amazon. There is some promise here, it is a good start and I can see where the author wanted to go and how far they did manage to, Given that, it would be a thought for the author to dust this work off, add to it, bring up the heat and the story and give the work what it’s missing.
