Plot Summary
Incubuses need sex to live but Kai’s been keeping himself hungry. He’s not one of those Fuck You to Death demons; he’s a decent guy who helps out at the Magical Animal Shelter and makes sure humans enjoy his body in moderation. He never expected to be arrested for a murder he didn’t commit, and away from his brothel for a few days, he soon finds himself starving. It doesn’t help that the bounty hunter who picked him up is an immortal, and a gorgeous one at that.
Tynan of the Mount is well aware that the incubus he arrested looks at him like he’s an all-you-can-eat buffet, but he wrote the Bounty Hunter Guild’s code of ethics and he’s not about to sleep with an acquisition, no matter how much they both want it. He needs to focus on work and get Kai into court without other Guild members trying to get a piece of the large reward on offer for his capture.
But Tynan believes in justice, and when he discovers Kai is innocent, he has to make a choice between Kai’s freedom and his own job. Can he guarantee a fair trial? Can he allow himself to feed Kai some of his unlimited life force through the medium of sex? And can he stop being a grumpy bastard for long enough to develop feelings for the handsome incubus?

Kai is a sweet, loveable incubus, but he finds himself in a situation he didn’t expect. It’s not so much that he’s been accused of killing a prince, he knows he didn’t. The problem is the bounty hunter that’s taking him back to face the music. It’s one thing to be an incubus that’s horny, it’s another when there’s only one choice and regardless of all else, that choice might be all that Kai wants it to be.
The work is a mixture of adventure, mystery and fantasy mixed with two main characters who are a delight in how they come to terms with each other. They both have strong personalities, they both have their own wills and beliefs and it’s that confrontation which I thought was the key moments of the work.
There are some moments of erotica through the storytelling, but it’s a bit flat in the telling at some points. Some of that comes from Kai’s internal monologue at the beginning of the work, but over time as Kai and Tynan travel, learn about one another, it’s more fully realized, more passionate and I think more enjoyable to see. But there are still moments within the erotica that felt rushed and didn’t quite fit the pair as much as I’d have liked.
Overall, the work is written well, though it needs at least one more editing pass for a scattering of word errors and the occasional spelling mistake. I’ll also add that using “incubuses” as the plural… really bothered me more than I thought it might. There are several passages where the story read as if there was a rush to get through the scene and that I think hurt the work overall. The main characters encounter a series of groups and personalities along the way, but there’s no time spent in telling more about them, occasionally the encounters seemed to amount to very little and that bothered me.
There is one scene in which something happens to Kai which made me squirm, it was rather brutal and while it made sense in the story itself, when it was over, I didn’t quite see the point of it happening other than to drive home a point in the story to both main characters. I wonder if there couldn’t have been a better way to do so. There are a number of side stories and characters encountered that I wished had been developed more. The little glimpse of them offered much, especially towards the end of the work, and I think it was a bit sad that they didn’t have more time to tell their story as well.
The core mystery of the work hovers throughout, and as things develop, and the truth comes out over time, the ending was a bit telegraphed for me. While that bothered me somewhat, the ending was, again, too rushed for my liking. I wish the author had spent more time in telling the real story behind the story when the ending came. It’s hurried, rushed and that is, overall, the problem I had overall.
The work needs a little more time to breathe, to speak, to explore things more than they are. Both Kai and Tynan I think needed to tell about themselves more, to explore their pasts more and, most of all, offer up the answers to so many questions about them both that weren’t quite resolved.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It felt like the work was a little too rushed at times. mainly when there needed to be some exposition needed. That said, I did like both Tynan and Kai very much for their character and personalities, and it’s how their relationship happens that is really the most interesting part of all.
Perhaps the twist was expected, it’s entirely possible that Kai’s story wasn’t delved into as much as I dearly wanted it to be. Nonetheless, the work is a cute telling story that I enjoyed, but felt as if I was missing something along the way.
Perhaps that might be in the plural form of Incubus being incubi and not incubuses…
