The past haunts Cole and seems that it always will. It drives him in his darkest hours and tears at his soul. But an encounter with the impossible reveals a truth. No matter human, devil or angel, the past will be known and it will claim its price in the future.
The work is possibly one of the most enthralling succubus themed stories that I have read in some time. The characters have depth and emotion, there’s a plot that remains true throughout. It’s not over the top or falls away from the core story and that strengthens the storytelling immensely. It’s not a work of erotica at the core, it is a mystery, in many ways, that unravels and as it does the main characters are changed in ways they didn’t expect.
The main character, Cole, has a lot of demons to overcome and through the events that he cannot avoid, those bring him into the orbit of the succubus Zafira. Zafira is a wonderfully complex character, seemingly evil and not much more at the beginning, but the story reveals much about her, why things are, and when she makes a choice, it’s one that makes sense for her. There’s no question of her succubus nature, but there’s a hint of bemusement, a touch of compassion and, when it matters, she is so much more than just herself.
The heat in the erotic passages are wonderful, particular between Cole and Zafira when they come to both see the truth in front of them. The horror aspects, when Zafira feeds, aren’t overdone, they don’t feel wrong and while they are an aspect of her, they aren’t Zafira or define her.
Admittedly, there’s a lot in this work that appeals to me, and those that read it, and know of The Realm, will understand just why that is. Beyond that the writing is stellar, there’s not a thing out of place or odd. The characters are amazing, no matter how small their role or how long they appear. It’s simply an excellent work of succubus fiction and well worth a read.

Possibly one of the best works of the year by far and engaging throughout. Perhaps I might have liked an epilogue set some time after the ending of the story, to see where Zafira and Cole are and what’s happened to them. Otherwise there’s really not much that isn’t perfect as things are.
The real shame is that this work is no longer available and I wish it still was on sale because it’s well worth adding to any serious collection of succubi fiction.
