It’s very difficult to write horror erotica well. By that I mean either the work uses the erotica just barely enough to qualify as erotica before abandoning it for the horror aspects. It also, often, appears that the writers of such works tend to not care about story, leaving that aside for the purpose of getting to the blood and gore that they want.
In the case of Succubi, this is a real problem as the sexual aspects are overplayed and the seduction is forgotten about. Then what happens is that the erotic moments are whispers of what they could be and instead comes a monstrous being with no other purpose.
But what if that didn’t happen?
The interesting thing about this work is that you are dropped into the midst of Connor having a dream which turns into something very hot and erotic, but then comes to a close. What follows is a flash of Connor’s experiences in the middle of the night and what happens through them. Personally I think the summary is a little bit misleading in what it says as a result.
The work mainly focuses on what happens within the dreams that Connor experiences and how those dreams are so desperately erotic for him. As the story unfolds, it’s quite obvious that Connor is being attacked by a Succubus, but the work does not actually tell that she is one. Nor do we see the Succubus in her true form, only that of the dream form she uses to seduce Connor.
The scenes of seduction are very hot, powerful, and tell much about what the Succubus herself desires as much as what Connor does. The work as a whole is very much erotica with a very small amount of horror. The horror parts are very muted and not overwhelming, but they are there to support the overall story and not take away from the heat that comes with the erotica that appears.
The heat in the story builds nicely and then, at the moment where the climax would be, the horror of the truth intrudes and reality returns to Connor. Over time the story mixes the dream world and the real world until the two merge and Connor comes to a realization about what’s happening… And then the story ends.
It’s less of a cliffhanger than a closure of a scene overall, but the thing is that it leaves many questions about what is happening, why it is happening, and what comes next. The story focuses on Connor and that leaves questions about Stephanie, what’s happening to her if anything, or if in truth Stephanie is the one that is causing all that is going on. It would have been nice to go a little bit further with this work and if not openly tell the answer to those questions at least give some direction to the pondering that comes from what the story gives.
Excellent writing, very hot flashes of erotica and the focus on that made the work for me much better than I expected. Still, it is a short story, felt unfinished and open, and in that my enjoyment of the work was muted somewhat.
I’m giving this work three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It would make for an excellent opening chapter to a novel, all of the hooks are there and there is much untold and clouded in mystery. For me that’s the one single problem. So much tease, so much promise and… it ends. It shouldn’t have.
