Plot Summary
Life is tough during wartime Baghdad but whorehouses remain an essential part of everyday life. Locals and soldiers alike need release and these sexy women aim to give them everything they want even if their clients demand their tight backdoor. When a diplomat wrongs his night-time plaything she comes back as an evil succubus set on revenge. Her revenge may seem sweet as she pleases both herself and the men she visits, but there will be hell to pay come morning. Two officers are bent on learning the real story of the mystical succubus but there are so many twists and turns they’re never certain where they’ll end up.

An Inspector finds himself ensnared in a mystery that has no end. A tale of a succubus who takes her pleasure and then the lives of the men she seeks for revenge. Along the way, the evil that men do is just as horrifying.
I found this work an extremely difficult read for several reasons, but the chief one is the difficulty the story has in telling its tale. There’s no real connection with any of the characters, the events are rushed and uneven and by the time that there seems to be a point, an explanation, the story loses its focus and loses its way.
This is not really a story about a succubus in that she makes a few short appearances in the story, but otherwise the focus is upon those in search of answers. There’s more focus on telling about the city, the setting up of events, the politics, the disaster that unfolds around all of them. It isn’t a work of erotica by any means, the work tending towards trying to be a mystery-adventure.
There is one, rather long, erotic scene, but there’s no heat in it. A much shorter scene at the beginning is quite good, but it ends in a stereotypical fashion. There’s simply, because of the setting, no real heat from the succubus’ actions to speak of.
The succubus herself is never really described, never fleshed out. She taunts a bit, she exists to give her victims some pleasure, and then the events turn towards the infliction of pain and suffering with an expected conclusion. There’s nothing told about her which explains how she came to be, how that happened and why. She simply “is” and that is the extent to her story.
There is a lack of flow between the scenes, explanations of how some of the characters get from one end of the story to the other. The ending itself is the most confusing thing of all, and I had to read the work twice in order to understand it a bit better. But even knowing who is in the final scene that doesn’t explain how exactly things turned out as they did.
The work needs another editing pass, there are several instances where similar sounding words are used in the wrong places. The prose is rough and unwieldy at times, occasionally becoming confused and uncertain. I suppose that could be an attempt at “the fog of war” which makes some sense, but it doesn’t help the story.

The work is less about the Succubus than it is about the cruelties of the time and place. There’s no real effort to tell her story, really she is for the most part barely there. A story that rambles, that has little purpose and in the end is only confusing is a shame. Editing and more depth at least would be a start.
