Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 28, 2021
Eddie Winters leads a harsh life that builds barriers around him. An encounter leads to his past returning and the unleashing of a succubus intent on his soul. Whether or not he can find escape isn’t as important as if the succubus will ever leave him.
The work is a mixture of myth, mystery and self exploration that works well in telling the story. It’s very focused on that, there’s little time spent in events that aren’t core to the plot. It is a bit difficult to follow at some points, mainly in the grammar and word structure, and I found myself trying to piece together events and connect them to prior ones in the work. That’s not a bad thing. but it led to some confusion.
The succubus of the work, who is never named. is not the stereotypical evil sexual being but more of a ghost, a presence than anything else. She’s a primal force seeking something and as things unfold she’s more a horrific power to push Eddie onward.
The work needs another editing pass to clean things up somewhat. Again it’s the oddities of the writing style, the somewhat flat dialogue as well takes a lot away from the storytelling. I’d like some of the scenes to be clearer, to be more to the point. There’s moments that feel skimmed over and expanding on those would do a lot to make things better.
Three out of five pitchforks.
A very different sort of succubus story, it isn’t erotica and as such there’s something telling to be found. Perhaps the succubus isn’t as present as she might be, but she’s still a force to be reckoned with.
