Book Review

The following review was originally published on Tera's Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 24, 2014

Martin has wanted his stepdaughter Emily for some time now, but of course he cannot have her. But he can have the next best thing can’t he? A visit to a place called Succubus Dreams, a deal agreed to and suddenly his dreams are true.

It is a story about Succubi, and yes, I can see them in the story in several characters. But the thing is that, to be honest, while they are part of the story, in truth they are simply a means for a long drawn out sex scene that did absolutely nothing for me.

The Succubi are there in spirit, on the edges of the story, teasing their existence, but in the end we never really see them save for a fleeting glimpse of the one who rules, one who serves, and as for the one that Martin sees… We never see her for who she is, only the fantasy that she drapes around herself.

Their names are not spoken, not once in the work. And that’s a problem for me because, to be honest, I was more interested in who the Succubi were than what the story was about. The two that are seen are ones that I would have liked to know more about, but we never do. There are some interesting hints, mannerisms and actions that happen in the beginning of the story, but then we leave them behind and move onto… well… just the sex.

When the end of the work arrives, the end result was telegraphed from the first couple of pages and I was not at all surprised what happened. In fact I expected it for just how stereotypical Martin’s first moment with the Succubus in control was and his actions with her.

The writing isn’t bad, actually some of the dialogue outside of the sex scenes is really quite good. But otherwise the work turns into an attempt at a hot flash, but without the heat. I found myself not really caring about Martin or the Succubus that was taking the place of Emily. I did care about the Succubus in control at the beginning and her secretary… That says a lot I think… Probably more than it should have.

I’m giving this work one out of five pitchforks.

A story without background really. A story that was driving towards the sex and not the characters. And in the end was much less than I expected it to be. Some might find heat in it… I just found myself shaking my head and moving onto the next work in the series… Which I will review next time…
