Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on May 12, 2023
If there was one thing Dean didn’t expect to happen, it was being the centre of attraction, and attention, of a very sexual, and demanding woman. But Yasmin isn’t what she seems, there is a story to tell and Dean will find that he’s very much part of that story.
The work is a very short hot flash of the main character being captured by a succubus, drawn into her grasp, and then made to perform at her bidding. There’s a scattering of mind control, a bit of succubus transformation and erotica as well. But overall the main core of the story is the mystery about who, exactly, Dean and Yasmin, really are.
Yasmin, the succubus of the work, shifts between being seductive, sensual, demanding, controlling, and, eventually, something more. Once the reveal of who she really is comes, much of the story makes sense, but even so there’s a lot of what she does, and says, that leaves a lot to be desired. As the work is such a short length, there’s not a lot of background explored, or her powers explained. More so, a number of things that happen around Dean, or are seen by him, leave a lot of thing unsaid and story untold about her.
The erotica simmers for the most part, there’s not really a single crescendo that stands out between the characters. It feels like the erotica is less about the heat than it is about the various erotic fetishes and themes that pop up which are connected to Yasmin.
Being very short, what I have defined in the past as a pamphlet, the story moves quickly once the main characters connect and Dean finds himself at Yasmin’s beck and call. The story feels scattered in the moments when a bit more exposition would have helped things. As well, the dialogue reads a bit off, possibly in that the actions that Yasmine takes and how Dean responds feel almost like they are barely interested.
The mystery between Yasmin and Dean doesn’t become explored as much as I think it needed to. Her desires are there, but why and how aren’t. The work closes in a unique way and how that happens does really need a following work to explore what comes from that. An interesting concept for a Succubus story as a whole, with a bit more focus and clarity from both characters this could have been quite a bit more enthralling a read.
Three out of five pitchforks.
A unique story idea about a Succubus and the one she desires, but it’s also one where the story needed to be somewhat longer. The passages could have had more meaning, Yasmin might have opened Dean’s eyes to her world before the climax of the story came and seen him towards that goal in a way that reflected her need for him. The story is there, the characters have much to say, the work just didn’t seem to fully be what it could have been.
