Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 1, 2023

Bree never saw herself as anything other than a good girl. But her inner succubus has awoken, and things have changed. There’s never enough sex, it’s impossible for her cravings to be sated. That doesn’t mean she won’t try. Still, a life of one-night stands is not a life worth living, but the fates could offer an alternative.

The work is a very complex coming of age story with some fantasy and magic themes bound by the main character being transformed into a succubus. How the story unfolds brings a lot of emotional impact as well as themes of family, need, want, and desire. Being how complicated the story is, how the characters deal with their reality is very harsh, but believable, which works very well.

The erotica spans the entire story and varies from vanilla sex through BDSM themes and many other fetishes that Bree finds herself craving to overcome the emptiness within her. While there is heat, at times it’s tempered by Bree only seeing the encounters as a means to an end and nothing more.

Bree, the succubus of the story, holds onto her humanity, and isn’t at all stereotypical or evil. Interestingly, she has a very unique appearance, being blue skinned, and the descriptions of her horns, wings, and tail are wonderful. More so, the powers she reveals are integral to the story and make for moments in which Bree has to come to terms with herself that added a lot.

The incubus of the work, Bastian, again isn’t stereotypical, and when his secret beyond Bree is explored, he’s a far more sympathetic character than through much of the story. That said, while he is very important to what happens, and he appears throughout, there’s a feeling that he just exists in the story. He has a wry wit, is very sarcastic, and has a presence, but it just feels like there should have been more revealed about him than what was.

To say this work is complicated would very much be an understatement. That said Bree and Bastian are so dearly complex which added a lot to the story. It’s that complexity that I found to be so attractive and held me in the story throughout.

The battle Bree has with herself, how her life changes, what she loses and finally gains are very telling. The threads that carry from the start to the quite unexpected close aren’t forgotten by any means. Well written, amazing characters and storylines make this well worth a read.

Four out of five pitchforks.

A follow on work would be, I think, something to think about. While Bree’s life has turned one way, there are others, like Bastian, whose stories aren’t delved into as much as they might have been. It’s an interesting thought and it would be something far different than what Bree lived through.
