Plot Summary

Charles Burin just wanted to get away from it all. Taking a post at his alumni’s college, he hopes he will leave all his 'other' issues behind. He's determined to not let temptation rule ,which seems to draw his other side out and get him into trouble. Unfortunately, Charles didn't considered meeting Taila. Talia isn't your average twenty one year-old waiting for the taste of graduation. She's a succubus. Her entire life is lived on the prospect of her time of maturity, when she will have to give up delicious food to depend completely on feeding off of emotions. Talia has one rule to abide: Never feed off of love. When worlds collide, who will break and will love survive?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 15, 2019

It is said that for succubi, feeding on love is a terrible thing. The stories whisper of dark fates and pain unending. For Talia, the question becomes if love is everything she believes it should be, and if her family have been holding back the truth.

The work is a mixture of fantasy, dark adventure, a bit of romance and longing held in a story that rushes from moment to moment, seeking out the climax which reveals all. It’s quite telling in that, the characters have a lot of issues to work out with themselves as well. The erotica simmers through the story, flashing into fire on occasion, but the darker aspects of the story mute that passion much of the time.

Taila, the succubus of the work, is something of a lost soul. Unsure of herself, being tugged in directions she has no control over. She’s not evil, there’s a very strong babe in the woods feel to her character that changes over time as the truth comes out.

The work needs another editing pass to make the dialogue better, to add missing emotion. Similarly, the narrative feels rushed and incomplete. It’s kind of a staccato in how the story is told and in being so there’s a lot of story that seems to be lost between the words that appear.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

As quickly paced as the story was, there’s a really interesting mythos constructed along the way which I would have liked to know more about. How the story closes feels right, but seems too rushed overall. Perhaps a bit more time to tie up the threads would have been nice to see.
