Plot Summary

You know that bitch from hell everybody talks about? That's me. I mean that literally. I was born in the seventh circle of Hell to two demons of noble lineage. Know what that means? Squat. My brimstone birth certificate and five bucks might get me a cup of coffee from Starbucks. The minute I was born, they handed me off to a wet nurse, sent me to earth, and left me to fend for myself. I suppose, I should thank them. They taught me at an early age that there is nothing in either world more important than self-sufficiency. To survive, I needed money. So, naturally, I became a stripper. Don't judge, it paid the bills. A lot of them. And it provided a solution to my particular dietary requirements. I'm a succubus. We eat lust for breakfast. And lunch. And dinner. What better place to get it than a seedy, smoke-filled bar full of horndogs shoving dollar bills in your thong?

Life was good.

Then, I met Ryan and fell in love. He knew what I was and loved me anyway. I loved him so much that we got married and I gave him twin children. And then he died. And left me alone. Okay, not completely alone. He left me two kids to raise and a crippling sense of loss. So, I did what any demon would do, I loaded up the kids and moved a thousand miles to start a new life. Now, my Hell is in suburbia and the most evil things in my life are my home owners' association and the PTA.

Maybe it wasn't too late to go back to Hell.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 14, 2020

It’s not easy being a succubus in love. It’s not any better when your love is gone and you are left to live your life, be there for your children, and deal with those things that the world doesn’t realize are there. But not everything and everyone is a disaster. Sometimes there’s a soul that you can’t shake or want to. In that comes the possibility of something wonderful, it you can deal with everything else.

The work is an interesting and adorably fun, mix of fantasy, mystery and a growing romance that just works so very well with the characters in the story. There’s heartbreak, hope, love and lust of course. But it’s more a telling of the story of a succubus trying to be there for her children and seeking something better. That’s really well told, having moments of joy and tenderness that just bring a smile. There’s really nothing over the top, save for Kara, the succubus of the work being so very snarky at times. That’s more of a defense mechanism for her than a fault and its really used well in telling the story.

The emotional aspects are very well done, the humor is just a lot of fun at the right points. Most of all. Kara isn’t stereotypical, she isn’t evil. She is however a force onto herself, regardless of her thoughts about herself at times. It’s that stubborn refusal to give up that takes the story in so many unexpected ways and makes this a wonderful work of succubus fiction.

Four and a half pitchforks out of five.

I adore Kara and the entire story is just wonderful from start to finish. I’d love to see a follow-on story with her, seeing where the last line in the book takes things. It need not be what this work was, not by any means, however. There’s a hole in Kara’s life and seeing that be closed, her world made whole would be delightful. Perhaps sometime there will be that closure.
