Plot Summary

In "The Abbot’s Shadow," set within the serene confines of the Monastery of Saint-Michel-du-Valais in southern France, Brother Luc, a devout monk, confronts a chilling temptation that shatters his tranquil existence. One fateful night, he is awakened not by sound, but by an otherworldly presence; a succubus, a demon of seduction and desire, who disrupts his peaceful slumber with her intoxicating beauty and allure.

As she materialises in his dim cell, her enchanting essence brings forth a conflict between his vows of piety and the primal urges she awakens within him. Despite his training and faith, Luc finds himself ensnared in her mesmerising grip, torn between the sacred and the satanic.

Struggling against the powerful attraction and the threat of damnation, Luc clutches his crucifix, embodying his last vestige of hope and resistance. The demon's whispered temptations challenge his commitment to a life of celibacy and spiritual devotion, pushing him towards a harrowing choice between his earthly desires and divine grace.

As more monks fall victim to this insidious evil, the bishop is summoned and must decide who can save the monastery from this ancient evil.

Book Review

There is evil afoot and once more Father Thomas O’Neill must step into the breach. A succubus corrupts a monastery, taking souls and wreaking havoc. A battle will ensue and the good father will find himself tested before all.

The work is a fantasy adventure mixed with a bit of succubus erotica around the edges to bring the threat she represents to the fore. It’s a bit of a winding story, it takes some time for the lead up to bring the main character of the series to face the succubus and then there is something of a rush towards the climax of the story and the close which passes in the blink of a page.

Overall, the story is more about the effects the succubus of the story, Lyraelle, has than it is of her appearing all that much. She blinks in and out of the story, performs this evil act or that one, and the disappears once more. She is evil, there is no question of that, but it’s also so very stereotypical as well. There’s no purpose to her other than what might be expected and that leaves I think quite a lot of storytelling untouched.

Lyraelle’s seductive nature is rather muted overall, but the evil she does, claiming souls, causing bodies to age and so on, takes over so much of the story that at times it felt like she was less of a succubus and more of just a creature of evil intent and I found that rather boring as a whole.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

This is a story with a succubus as a very minor plot point than being a story about the succubus herself. She’s very much the “evil of the week” sort of a character and being so I felt like the story didn’t make as much use of her as it could have. How the story ends makes it clear Lyraelle will seemingly never return to this series, but the idea of her being the nemesis of the main character feels like an intriguing concept that might have been something to think about overall.
