Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 6, 2023
Delilah has a desire within herself that drives her endlessly. No matter the cost, she’ll do anything to achieve her goals. Making a deal with a demon isn’t the best idea, but the power will be worth it. The problem is Delilah didn’t expect to summon a succubus and her desires might be turning towards another, closer goal.
The work is a long, slow erotic burn between the main character Delilah and the succubus of the story, Arce. Set in a magic fantasy universe, there’s a lot of world building as well to push the story towards the climax. It’s in the moments between Arce’s dominant nature and Delilah’s internal struggle within herself between the pleasures Arce gives, and her demand that Delilah submit to her which takes the story along a unique path. The question of what one’s soul desires comes into play and that struggle is very telling throughout for both characters.
Arce, the succubus of the work, is described as being a futa, but I think it’s more accurate to call her gender-fluid in many ways. The descriptions of her form, the way her personality teases and pulls is quite telling. Where things take a turn is when she reveals who she really is. It’s not completely unexpected and even so the threads being connected work well together.
I’m not really sure she can be really described as evil however. She’s a temptress, she dominates others and yes, she toys with Delilah. There are moments in the beginning when she considers feeding on Delilah’s soul in an aside as well. But this all changes from the first moments of erotica. There’s a longing within Arce and how that transforms events is really well explored.
Arce is so very interesting as a succubus character, and she’s one of the more unique I’ve seen this year. How the story ends is a bit disappointing, both for the reader but more so for Arce and Delilah.
The story is well written, the characters have depth and emotion and while there could have been more, this is still a well-told and delightful story. I would have liked however more story of the real Arce, to explore what she’s really like beyond the bare hints at the close of the work.
Four out of five pitchforks.
Perhaps there needs to be a follow on work to tie up the story. That’s not to say things would be perfect, but the ache which remains in both, and the sadness in their thoughts gives me a lot of pause and to wonder how things could be.
