Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 9, 2020
The waters are beautiful, but that beauty hides a darkness beneath the waves. It calls to a group of friends, to sink below and become something other, something evil, something to claim them forever.
The work is an erotic horror mystery with overall tepid heat that runs through the work being punctuated at points by flashes of seduction and transformation. There are very strong hints of possession, mind control and domination as well which overall serve to add an air of tension over the characters as events unfold.
There is a hint of something close to a succubus transformation or possession at times, though it might be best to say that the female characters that are taken by the lake’s powers become seductresses with a singular purpose, one of which is fully possessed by an evil that has a very succubus-like appearance to them.
With that said, there’s really not that much in the way of succubi or incubi themes in the work, though they are referenced in how the characters act as they transform and the personality shifting that comes with that. The missing part of the story, for me at least, was delving more into the actual reason for what happens at the lake. There’s a hint of things, but really a flashback might have given more focus to the story and revealed things in a clearer and more strikingly evil way.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
There’s just such a teenage sexy horror slasher tone to the entire work which does work well in telling the story. The ending however goes jump scare and bothers me a lot. I don’t feel like it added anything to the story and honestly the last page could be removed and the entire story I think would have been better than it was. It’s interesting for the slow fall of the characters and what happens to them however, even if the actual appearance of succubi is more inferred than really being there.
