Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 1, 2022
Sex isn’t everything for Angel but being a succubus it’s not all that bad really. Still, having to deal with the worst of humanity in order to have the best rush becomes a problem eventually. Even a succubus has a conscious and that can be the heaviest burden of all.
The work is a fast paced tale of erotica with a fair deal of world and character building around the edges. It’s very focused on the events and in being so there’s a tendency for the story to dive headlong into the erotica and leave bits of Angel’s development scattered throughout.
The erotica lacks heat, but considering the story and who Angel traps, that does make sense overall. It’s a bit adult movie levels of heat but it makes me wonder what would happen if she encountered someone good instead of the evil she does.
Angel, the succubus of the story, is something of a unique succubus character in how her powers work and what happens in the aftermath of her feeding. It’s actually a really interesting answer to the problem succubi have in what happens to their prey afterwards.
Angel’s internal monologues work well, they tell of her emotions, needs and drives. They also press upon her guilt over what she needs to do to survive. Considering that she focuses on the worst of humanity, it’s a bit of a two-sided coin which might lead to some interesting plots.
The work is very short, which is a shame. I’d have liked to have seen more time spent in telling how Angel came to be where she is. Beyond that, the hints about her sister are telling, giving something to endanger her as the series continues.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
A good start to the series, the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger that delighted me. Angel has a lot of promise, the story universe seems to as well. But the work is just too short and I hope future stories will give more time for telling a larger and more detailed story.
