Plot Summary

Belladonna was born wrong. At least that’s what her parents, religious community, and even her beloved sister believe. Walking away from the church hasn’t helped her come to terms with her purpose in life, and when her sister is diagnosed with cancer, Belladonna has nowhere to turn…until a demon offers her a deal.

After agreeing, nothing is like she expects. There’s no fiery hell to speak of. Her soul seems to still be her own. All she’s required to do is serve. When she’s auctioned off to Rusalka, a powerful and ruthless succubus, her confusion only grows. Rusalka surprises her at every turn, even refusing to allow Belladonna to bear a child that would benefit the entirety of their territory.

Rusalka has sacrificed everything for their people. There are no lengths they won’t go to as leader…but they see something of themself in Belladonna, a familiarity that tempts beyond anything they could have dreamed. They want to keep her.

But if Belladonna can’t release her shame and step into a future where she’s living for herself instead of in service to others… Things may be over even before they begin.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 26, 2025

Belladonna has paid a price throughout her life and paying one more for the sake of her sister’s life is one she is willing to pay. But the price comes with a promise. But when she meets Rusalka, it’s her own truth that becomes revealed and the future offered seems impossible. It’s her own past that is keeping her from seeing what Rusalka wishes to give her. Perhaps, in time, they will both discover that which each of them needs.

The work is a wonderfully complex story of self-understanding, desire and the question of belief that ties together two very different characters on the surface, but also allows for them both to explore themselves. Nothing is simple as the story unfolds, there are deeply troubling challenges for the characters to confront and come to terms with. It’s that development which plays out over the course of the story which delighted me.

While there are moments of passion, this really isn’t a work that’s focused on the erotica alone. The erotic encounters add to the story, give meaning to what the characters are feeling and experiencing. It’s not sex for sex alone, there’s purpose to the moments and the transformation of the relationship that comes in he aftermath.

Rusalka, the succubus character of the story, is as complex as the other main character Belladonna. It takes some time for the story to pass into her mindset and tell who she is and that reveals a unique succubus by far. With that comes the society she leads, the souls who she wants better things for. It’s honestly so very close to my own heart that when her world was explored, when other succubi and incubi appear, I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

I wish there had been more told about Rusalka’s world, to show her successes and have Belladonna share in them. None of the succubi or incubi are stereotypical, they have wonderful personalities and stories of their own to tell. Their world is teased, hinted at, and I wish that more of it was seem than was allowed. I would dearly like to see a follow on story about the succubi and incubi in this universe alone, to be enveloped in their world and I think that would be an amazing story too.

Four out of five pitchforks.

Given that this is the beginning of the series, and there are other women involved who’s stories are still to be told, I’m not expecting to return to Belladonna and Rusalka and that’s a shame. What comes next for them is something I wanted to see and that didn’t happen. The work ends well, but I’m left wondering what happens with the succubi and incubi, the future ahead for them. It’s the happy ever after story that’s missing here for me. Hopefully that will appear in later works in the series, but we shall see.
