Plot Summary
Aaron, a real estate agent in Toronto, has spent man tedious months dealing with an old woman, Ms. Volkov, from rural Ukraine about a decrepit mansion in a rundown part of town. She’s unable to travel from Europe to see the property, but wants to know absolutely everything about it before making an offer. She has no phone, no internet, so communication is tedious—with penned letters.
He is just about ready to give up on selling the old house to the old woman—and then she sends Aaron a huge wad of cash, to thank him for his time. With the cash is an invitation, for Aaron to travel to rural Ukraine to meet Ms. Volkov, and perhaps to sign off on the deal.
He makes the trip, taking along photos and videos of the mansion and the surrounding area. It’s a multi-day trip to get to Ms. Volkov’s small castle in the middle of nowhere, to discover that Ms. Volkov is not an old woman at all, but a stunningly beautiful young woman with millions of dollars and a very mysterious lifestyle.
The stay isn’t supposed to be for more than a night, but Ms. Volkov insists that Aaron stay for longer. Just how long? Well, that quickly becomes an answer that Aaron wants when he realizes he’s trapped inside of that castle.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 12, 2024
There is a mystery afoot and Aaron finds himself the centre of attention. A mysterious woman with mysterious questions surrounding her, brings him to seek her out for reason he thought understood, but the truth discovered is unexpected. Perhaps the greater mystery is Aaron himself and what he is missing within himself.
The work is a deeply mysterious story of passions, desires, and a search for self-awareness. Mixed into that comes a very strong theme of domination and submission with a hint of something otherworldly around the edges to bring things together. It’s the mystery theme, especially wrapped around Ms. Volkov that carries the plot and makes this very much a page turner.
It’s something of a dream state in a way, the events told, Aaron’s reactions, what Ms. Volkov reveals, or doesn’t are teases of something else that isn’t quite explored deeply. That mystery around Ms. Volkov is both troubling and seductive in the work and I thank that worked really wel.
Though the story is titled as Succubus, Ms. Volkov, is and isn’t a succubus overall. Her mysterious nature, the dreams she wraps Aaron in, how she shapes the world feels succubus-like. But she doesn’t appear blatantly as a succubus with horns and tail. It’s not needed to be of course, but she’s an enigma which I would have liked explored more fully towards the end of the work, but wasn’t.
The true focus is on Aaron being manipulated into his need by Ms. Volkov and where that takes him and the story as a whole. That brings the story to dwell mostly on his feminization and the web that Ms. Volkov traps him in. Within that are aspects of a succubus theme, but overall it’s not the point and it’s something of a missing, or really well explored part of Ms. Volkov’s character and I wish it had been.
Two and a half out of five pitchforks.
It’s really not that much of a succubus story as a whole, which is reflected in the rating given. It is interesting, the characters are mysterious and I enjoyed the story telling very much. Still with that said, Ms. Volkov is a cypher unexplored which was a shame. She well could be a succubus, there’s enough hints of that aspect after all.
I think that leaving her a mystery is the best thing honestly. She’s a wish fulfillment device after all, and that drives the story onwards well. That still doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have added another aspect to peek behind the curtain and see who Ms. Volkov truly was.
