Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 11, 2023
A death unexpected and strange leads a man to his brother’s belongings, a book of mystery, and to encountering seductresses from another place and time. But one cannot seek darkness without being touched eternally.
The work is a complex narrative of past, present and future events which circle around the main character and his wife as they are touched by succubi and incubi. There are moments of heat and passion, but overall the focus holds on the encounters each have, what comes from them, and the final realization of what the quest has brought.
The succubi and incubi aren’t really evil, they are forces of their sexual nature which draw the main characters into their fates and onwards. They are mainly sexually horrific in a way, this being in their actions, their forms at points in the story, and what their needs force onto others. There is some mythos being created along the narrative of them, hints of their being, how they exist, and what they crave beyond all else.
The transformational scenes are fascinating, both in their descriptions, but more so in how the need grows, the characters change, and what turns the story takes from that point. It is a complex tale, the story reads somewhat out of order, but that isn’t a flaw as the chapters link together well and the meaning from earlier chapters is made clear.
There’s the beginnings of quite a unique story here, though it feels a bit lost around the edges. The characters are in search of themselves, the plot seeks a resolution and, eventually, at the conclusion the story leaves many questions and things to wonder about.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
As this was noted as being the first work in a series, I’m sure as to where things go from here. Perhaps it’s more exact to say that this story has ended, but there are many other succubi to tell of. From what little is revealed of them here, that would be worth investing another story into and see what develops.
