Plot Summary
Booze and blood are the ultimate currency, and I'm determined to be the one calling the shots.
But there’s one person standing in my way: Alejandro, head of the Canino clan. And to make matters worse, he’s got a succubus girlfriend named Ava who’s as dangerous as she is irresistible.
She’s a temptation I never saw coming, and now I’m not sure if she’s on my side or just using me for her own twisted games.
It’s a high-stakes game of ambition, backstabbing, and seduction. But I’m not afraid to play dirty and I’m determined to win, no matter what it takes.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 28, 2023
In the midst of a changing world, the creatures of the night compete with one another to control the world around them. But for one of them, his goals are different and he will do what it takes to get what he wants. But there is a vision before him, and she has her own ideas too.
The work is fantasy adventure set in the 1920s, mainly focused on the vampire characters of the work with a bit of a side story containing the succubus that appears in the pages. Something more of a Machiavellian plot and all that suggests, it sets up the main character and their world reasonably well.
It’s not a work of erotica or romance really, though the succubus Ava brings a bit of that flavour as the plot unravels. Ava isn’t a stereotypical succubus, she’s very much of this time and place, her mannerisms are chameleon-like which works well when she appears. There’s a hint of her powers, mainly in being a seductress, though her more fire and brimstone self appears for a short time.
The plot and characters try to give life to the story, to draw the reader into their world and immerse them in the story. But there are a number of issues to overcome, one of them just can’t be and that well might not be the fault of the author.
The largest problem is with the formatting, the text which at times is unreadable. It is entirely possible that I received a corrupted file in the upload and if that’s true then the author needs to get that looked after quickly. There’s a story here that I think has a lot of good aspects to it, but it’s extremely difficult to have a coherent read.
When the text is transformed, for example, from “She asked too” into “9ge defed too” any flow becomes lost and the story just has no possibility to hold the reader’s interest, it’s really a shame. Setting that issue aside, there’s a lack of heat in the dialogue, some of the characters are very thin and there are points were the story becomes a flat monologue that is missing a breath of life.
Given the characters, especially Ava who does interest me, but really doesn’t have much in the way of being a succubus, and I think that’s because of the time this work is set in and the societal norms that shaped the time, there’s little passion or seduction. I think that’s the real issue here.
The work needs a serious editing, if not for the formatting and text issues, then to add emotion to the dialogue most of all. The story itself is interesting and offers possibilities going forwards, but as things are, this work really does none of the characters any good.
Two out of five pitchforks.
More of a vampire story with a succubus on the edges as a whole. Ava is in the story, but she’s a minor part of events. I’m going to hope that the series going forwards has more heat, more depth, and gives not only Ava, but all of the characters a chance to develop and grow. There’s something interesting here, but it’s not quite out of the shadows.
