A look across a room between two solitudes brings about a dance of two hunters seeking prey. The dance becomes their desire and need, bringing the hunters to find themselves both hunted and preyed upon.
The work is a wonderful tease of words and actions from the beginning. Both main characters, who are never named, are seductive in their own ways, leading the other onwards with suggestion, hints and teases so they cannot escape each other’s hunger. The heat simmers, a delightful brew of expectations and replies which paint a vivid picture of what they both want from the other.
It’s not a work of erotica until the foreplay, and there is a lot of that, is torn away and they come together, crashing into their needs and really it’s almost perfectly told in the main character’s thoughts and their actions. There’s no thoughts however from the succubus of the work, save for her dialogue and she’s a bit of a mystery that the main character’s monologue tries to put into focus but really doesn’t get to the core of who she is above what she is.
The succubus herself is a bit different than what one would expect her to be. She’s seductive, without question, but at the climax of the work, when her true nature appears, it’s a bit of a shock from the seduction before and turns the story on its head. She’s a distinctly different sort of being, and sharply different most succubi.
It’s at this point where the truths of both characters are revealed… mostly. I felt a bit disappointed at the ending, but it was suggested from the beginning where things were going if one paid attention to the main characters’ cloaked references to themselves. It’s abrupt, a bit sad, and overall I’d have liked something more than where things fall.
Not a complete answer, just one that offers something more of who they both really are and what they both really are. This is, regardless of my feelings about the ending, simply a wonderfully told seduction and I enjoyed the work for that most of all.
Four and a half pitchforks out of five.
Well told seduction with two characters who delight in the game as much as the rewards. Perhaps more of why things were and who both characters are beyond the seduction would have been nice. And something more of an ending than there is. An excellent piece of writing nonetheless and well enjoyed.
