Plot Summary
Lonely young witch, Veronica Hardwicke, has struggled to get on with her life after the death of the elderly husband who’d left her a fortune and a sprawling estate in mystical Sleepy Hollow. When frightening things go bump in the night on a stormy Fourth of July, who better to call than the sexy developer and contractor, Sean Jones, who's been renovating her mansion for months?
Sean may grace the tabloid pages with a different supermodel on his arm every night, but it's Veronica who drives him nuts. Ignoring his instinct to stay away, he answers her summons.

Obviously not all series have Succubi appearing all of the time and the Sleepy Hollow series by Taryn Kincaid doesn’t have one of the Succubi Sisters appear in every single work in a major way… Still they do pop in, if only for a moment or three, which is nice to see.
Being that this is a series, world building is an important thing. As the setting of Sleepy Hollow has a good number of supernaturally connected beings in it, some of them do, of course, have to have their moment as well. Sometimes the moment is more than it seems at first…
One of the most telling things about someone’s personality is their fears, but also their fantasies. But what if the fantasy contains one of their greatest fears? That the one wanted might not want them in return for that is how they seem to be… or are they?
Veronica is a witch with two problems, one is that she has been alone for some time now and she has become frightened of things that go bump in the night. The other problem she has is that she’s found someone that she is hopelessly in love with, but cannot believe herself good enough for him… even if she sees him almost every day.
Sean seems to have everything, but the problem is that what he doesn’t have is Veronica who has haunted him since he met her. And he would like to be the thing that goes bump in the night with her. That is if he can overcome his own fears about Veronica.
The thing about this story is that, really, the two of them are mirrors of each other’s wishes and fears. Both cannot see themselves being good enough for the other. Both cannot understand why they are so attracted to the other in spite of themselves. The fears are in their thoughts from the beginning to the end, looking for anything to cause them to turn away from the other. That is, of course, until one takes a chance and the other is roped into things by their relative. Perhaps the magic isn’t so much in the magic used but the magic in finally taking a chance, pushing their fears aside and just being together.
When the two of them are together, it is a lovely slow burn towards a moment of passion and desire that plays out in the most delicious way between the two. There is a little bit of magic, used in a very cute way by Veronica that made me smile when it appeared. I also liked the releasing of the false front that each of them had placed in front of the other, how that was stripped away and their own truths came to the forefront.
I did have one small problem and that was Sean calling Veronica princess. duchess, countess, and so on. I found that drew me from the story when his pet names for Veronica kept changing through their moment together and then at the end of the work, calling her princess again. It just felt… wrong… somehow… going from the name he called her when he thought she wasn’t listening to others and then back again to it. If not for how this story ended, I would have been wondering if they were a couple or not for that name’s return.
The story was a lovely tease through most of it, both of their personalities very clear as the story went along. The games played between the two were perfect for who they were, though I felt that Sean lost himself trying to explain, to understand Veronica. It also is a bit of a puzzle how quickly that Sean came to deal with Veronica’s magic, though I suppose being that Campbell, in the previous work, wasn’t exactly “normal” and Sean likely had met Lily, he could have had a clue about the oddness of those that live in Sleepy Hollow.
I found myself wondering where Sean and Veronica go from here, a witch and a “mortal” and what happens next between them… One thing is quite certain though… I expect like his brother, Sean isn’t going anywhere…
Being that Sean is Campbell’s brother, who appeared with Lily as the main characters in the previous work Lightning, both Campbell and Lily appear for a fleeting moment in this work. While they really have very little to do with this story, save that Campbell sets up Sean a bit, it was nice to see where their relationship has moved onto. While a glimpse only, it made me smile and i did love the little tease of what that pair is up to… And there are still Lily’s other sisters that have to have their own moment…. Which they will…
I’m giving this work four out of five pitchforks.
Lovely heat, characters that come together really well as the story unfolds, and more tapestry added to this universe which I enjoyed. Some of Sean’s pet names for Veronica did get to me a bit, especially he not settling on one which bothered me more than it should have I suppose. Still in spite of that one small quibble a lovely hot read with story is never a bad thing…
