Plot Summary
I learned the truth about Ethan too late. Sooner, and I’d have happily turned him in like I was supposed to do, honoring my—sacred, some would say—duty to Church and State. Nothing in the Empire was hated more absolutely and irredeemably as an incubus except, perhaps, the human who aided one. My parents raised me correctly, my teachers taught me all the right things, but there were situations their training guides hadn’t prepared me for. Dry, textual warnings like, “You may discover it’s your best friend, your roommate, your crush,” didn’t come with guidance for the breathless moment of realization or the sick feeling of dread that followed. They only provided the number for a hotline that I would never, ever call.

Colby knows Ethan’s secret and she wishes she didn’t. He’s an incubus, she knows he is, but he doesn’t know her secret as well. The world tells her to foo one thing, but her heart and soul tells her another. Perhaps Ethan will come to see that anything is possible if they both can believe in each other.
The work is an erotic hot flash, quite short in length, but in the space that was allowed the story offers so much emption, need, wistfulness and want that it seeps into every page. The relationship between Colby and Ethan is dearly present from the first page, it’s complicated, a little lost, and seeking itself, but when the moment comes when their true selves entangle, it’s breathtakingly well done.
The erotic heat simmers throughout, building oner the story until the climax comes and Ethan’s incubus nature comes out fully. Ethan is anything but a stereotypical incubus, he’s far more than that. His need nibbles at him constantly and in the aftermath of being intimate with Colby, when his truth comes out and they both can settle within themselves, that was just something special and wonderful to see.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
The work comes to a close in a way that just works and feels right in many respects. It’s a shame that the work is no longer available as it tells a story of faith in a way that isn’t quite what might be expected. Sometimes the faith you have is in the one you trust above all else.
