Plot Summary

Navigating high school is a Herculean task when you're part demon, part human, and wholly out of place. As the son of an incubus and a mortal, I juggle two lives: one where I blend into the lockers and lectures and another steeped in supernatural legacies and the whispers of infernal kin. Aging slowly and feeling all too deeply, my greatest fear is succumbing to my darker half and the hunger for human souls that comes with it.

My kind has scrubbed sins from mortal spirits for generations, steering humanity away from its darkest impulses. But as the first of my lineage with a soul, I've become the unwilling star of the netherworld, dodging the ambitions of my master demon grandfather and the advances of a persistent succubus, all while fending off the envy of my demonic peers.

Life's monotony in the endless cycle of schools and towns, courtesy of my father's appetite for souls, is broken by Clara Elbert—the fallen queen of high school society. Once at the pinnacle of popularity, Clara's fall from grace has left her a target for bullies and a beacon for the outcasts. Her rainbow hair and retro art defiance signify a spirit not quickly quashed—a spirit that draws me in despite every instinct to remain aloof.

The allure grows as we circle each other, each hiding our scars. She sees me as the new, enigmatic student—smart, kind, and disarmingly cute. But every kiss is a test of restraint, every moment together a battle against my baser urges. With the homecoming dance on the horizon, we hope for a night of magic and normalcy, even as the ghosts of our pasts conspire to tear it all apart. Will we dance under the lights, or will our literal and figurative demons claim the night?
