Plot Summary
Ruby Flemming is a succubus – and not a particularly good one. Damning souls to Hell for all eternity is no fun. She needs a vacation to mope on the beach with an endless supply of drinks and books. She didn’t plan on helping a wolf shifter desperate to save his pack, but sticking by his side may be the best decision of her life.
Falling for a succubus was not in Ethan’s plans. Now that he’s found his mate, he’s not letting Ruby go. But if the Devil has anything to do with it, these two are about to experience a lot more than just falling in love. When you’re in the devil’s playground, anything can happen!
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 14, 2023
Ruby is not at all happy about being a succubus, and her family thinks she’s the worst of them all. But Ruby believes there has to be something better, and perhaps going on a vacation will give her time to figure herself, and her future out. What she doesn’t expect to find are her aunt Portia, a very devilish bartender named Lou, and a shifter who might, just might, be everything she never knew she was looking for.
The work is a wonderfully told romance mixed with mystery and adventure. It’s fun, the characters are rich and the overall story and setting works perfectly to give the characters space to grow and see where things take them all. The world building is done very well, it’s really never an information dump, and when that does have to happen it’s wrapped well in the storytelling that you don’t quite notice it happening.
While there are scenes of erotica, it’s not the most important thing that happens. The character development is exceptional, where Ruby and Ethan start is far removed from who they are by the end of the story. But also there is a lot of development in the minor characters of the hotel, as well as the two major, and continuing characters in the series, Portia and Lou.
There are three succubi in the story, Ruby, the main character, Portia, her Aunt and Roja, the last of which barely appears. Both Ruby and Portia are delightful and unique Succubi in their own rights. They are so very much different than what one might expect and yet there are hints and teases about them that were wonderfully fun. It’s a shame that Roja is so very much a disappointment, but that comes in the story and really had to be expected.
The underlying theme is mischief and fun and that appears throughout the story. Lou, who is very obvious in whom he is, really brings that mischief out perfectly. While the story is about Ruby and Ethan, it’s also very much about Portia and Lou as the book has to balance both the romance that drives the main characters and the world building for the future.
There’s a lot of good here and a wonderful story to enjoy. There are, however a couple of points where succubus is used instead of succubi, a couple of minor issues with word misuse appear here and there as well. That minor quirk set aside, I would have liked more story about Ruby and Portia told. There’s a lot about Portia not revealed, but really hinted at and that really needs to be explored as the series goes on. Especially one point that was touched on a few more times in passing than what otherwise might have been just a comment from her. Similarly, it would be nice to get to know Lou better and just why all of this came to be. Yes it might be more world building, but then that’s always fun when the story and characters provide the opening.
Four and a half pitchforks out of five.
The work is just a lot of fun throughout both in the characters and the story as a whole. It’s a bit of a shame that Ruby won’t be part of things going forwards, though knowing that Portia will be, in all of her delightful mischievous ways does bring something to await with delight. Cute and fun really can make a series better and there’s a lot of promise to be found in the works to come. It should be a lot of fun.
