Plot Summary
Alpha dragon shifter Cooper Dawson didn’t plan on visiting Hellscape Holidays Resort. It’s not his fault he crashed on the beach, barely clinging to life after a battle. Sometimes life isn’t at all fair. For Alice, the past haunts her and is forever waiting to bring her life to an end. For Cooper, the battle against those with no honour has brought a terrible price to his kind. Could the needs of one and the honour of the other create something that neither expected to be real?
The work dovetails nicely with the ending of the prior work and what’s more fun is how events from the past remain present and influence the current story. There’s a real feeling of connection between the stories, both in the characters, like Portia, who are part of the resort and the traditions that came to be. It’s heartfelt, romantic, and so very emotionally telling on the two main characters Cooper and Alice.
While there are moments of joy, the past tempers Alice, it’s telling how hard it is for her to open her heart and find passion. Cooper’s sense of honour sometimes brings mistakes and misunderstandings, but that serves to make the story so much deeper and delightful a read by far.
While the story is delightful and Cooper and Alice’s story is wonderfully told, there’s just not enough Portia, the main Succubus character of the series, in the story for me overall. Yes there are threads from the prior work that come up, there are scattered moments when Portia appears to poke and nudge the main characters into their relationship. But with regards to Portia herself, she’s just barely in the story overall.
That’s not to say when she appears she’s not important to the story or provides a viewpoint or observation that is meaningful. It’s more that just appearing and then vanishing again feels like her character is not being used as well as she otherwise might have been. Yes, there’s a lot of bias in that, she bemuses me in many ways and her story is still so very much a mystery. Scattering breadcrumbs of knowledge would I think add something of a ongoing air about her that would explain so much more than what’s otherwise been done.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
The series cannot, of course, focus on Portia. There’s other stories of romance and passion to tell and honestly it’s as an amazing read as the first work in the series. However it’s not really a Succubus story like the first work, Portia is part of things, but she’s not as connected as in the first. We’ll see what the next work in the series brings, I do hope for a little more told about Portia and Lou. It would be nice to see.
