Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 13, 2018
You can find anything in Vegas. Warlock, mage, vampire, even a succubus waiting in the wings is not a surprise. For Robert, the problems are all around him, and they aren’t going to get better when he finds out what the secret of his friend Marcus is, and who his mother really is.
The work is a rather complicated mix of fantasy, mystery and adventure that has a lot of plots and threads rushing about. It feels at times like the story is trying to find itself, to cast the characters and plot into a web and see what comes out. It’s interesting, there are moments that are quite funny or telling as well.
The plot thread about Marcus and Sandra, the succubus of the work, is quite striking and surprising really. With that said, all of the main characters, Robert, Marcus and Sandra are quite captivating and just a lot of fun to watch interact and deal with what happens.
Sandra, the succubus of the work, is just such a force of nature in her personality and presence. There are hints of her nature, little aspects of her overall being that I thought worked well. But she really wasn’t in the story so much as being carried along to add a bit of wit and snark from time to time. I lied that quite a lot, she is a lot of fun, but it still felt like she was underused and that was a shame.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It’s a fantasy adventure story with a succubus, not really a succubus story overall. It’s a shame that so little was done with Sandra, that her character was not explored more, that her past was glossed over. Still, it is a fun and delightful story overall. The ending is a bit of a shame, what follows will be, I hope, something more than I have a feeling it will be.
