Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 4, 2023

Briana awakens to find the world she knew isn’t there anymore. Mahalia and her kind have taken over and humanity are their pets. As much as Briana hates what she has become and what she has done to her friend Stacy, there’s nowhere to run and there will be a price to be paid.

Continuing on from the prior work, this part of the series gives a bit more exploration of what’s been happening outside and what Briana has only seen a glimpse of. There’s a bit of character development for Briana, but overall the focus is on Mahalia and what she has done before Briana has to face what Stacy has become and then going out into a world that she doesn’t recognize anymore.

Very short again, the story is very rushed, there’s not a lot of time for building drama or making what’s going on have a real impact. The work reads at times like a summary of events and an infodump that, while telling something of events, just doesn’t have heat when it needs it or building up drama when there’s a chance to do so.

There’s not really much in the way of a succubus theme, the story seems to be pushing that aspect aside for the futa storyline. Where things get a bit odd is towards the end of this work where Briana is referred to as a vampire, is attacked like one as well. Once more the story passes over some plot points and events which could have been explored. Things are spoken about in passing, or the narration comments when Briana is doing something and it reads so very flat and uninteresting.

The work continues to need some really serious editing. Certainly Mahalia’s interview would have been better with more passion to her and the person interviewing, the changes in the world seem so bland to be just not interesting. It’s hard to become invested in the story when the characters have dialogue with no passion, there’s really no erotica save for what’s told in passing either. Just reading the character dialogue out loud feels odd and it wouldn’t take much to slow the story down, make it read better, and give the story a chance to grow into itself more.

Two out of five pitchforks.

Beyond how short each part of the series is, the way the story is told just needs a serious editing. It’s too scattered, the ideas come in a rush and then disappear as the story moves as quickly as it can to the next moment. There are some interesting themes here, but it’s not a cohesive story and that’s a real shame. Perhaps the author will bundle these works together and take the time to add in the missing heat that’s needed. At this point, the story just exists. It could be so much more with some care taken.
