Lost Girl is a Canadian developed and produced television series which premiered in the 2010 season on the television channel Showcase.

The Ash was a title held by the leader of the Light Fae in the Lost Girl television series. All of the leaders of the Light Fae are named after trees and The Ash is the name that all those that take the position of leader of the Light Fae are called in place of their own name. To the end of the Third Season of the series, it had been held by three different individuals, the first unnamed save for being The Ash, the second being Lachlan and the third being Hale.

The Ash serves as the ultimate authority in the matters of the Light Fae and controls most matters which involve them. The Ash has a compound where he resides generally, though at least one Ash did not use it. Humans that are claimed or owned by The Ash wear a symbol upon themselves that marks them as belonging to The Ash. The most famous human being Lauren who was claimed by The Ash in order to save many Fae from a plague that struck them.

The office of The Ash is a reflection of the Fae that holds it, meaning that the personality of the one called The Ash tends to change how it is seen by the Fae at large, the relationships with the Dark Fae and their leader The Morrigan, and other diplomatic, political, and social aspects of Fae society.

As there were four individuals who claimed the position of The Ash up to the beginning of the Fifth Season of the series, this entry will cover each of them individually.

The first Ash was known only as The Ash during his reign and very little was revealed about him in the series. His true name, what kind of Fae he was, and his abilities were never made clear. The Ash first appeared after Dyson and Hale kidnapped Bo and brought her before The Ash for questioning over her kills and her allegiance. He was responsible for the placing of a curse upon Nadia, Lauren's girlfriend in order to entrap Lauren into working for the Light Fae as their doctor. He was Ash during the first season of the series only and fell to an attack by Aife, Bo's mother during the season finale. His final fate was never made clear and it is questionable whether he was alive or dead at the end of the First Season. Upon this event, the position of Ash was made vacant by the Light Fae council and through a contest that was held, the position was eventually filled by Lachlan in the Second Season as The New Ash.

Character History

First Season

The Ash first appeared after Dyson and Hale brought Bo to The Ash for questioning about her kills and who Bo held allegiance to. Through his doing so, Bo meets Lauren and as well The Morrigan, one becoming her lover and the other her enemy. Following this meeting, The Ash considered killing Bo, but The Morrigan convinces him that they need to find out more of Bo's history. The Ash attempted to force Bo to choose a side, either Light Fae or Dark Fae, but she refused to do so and decided to become unaligned. The Ash and The Morrigan came to the decision that they should kill Bo, but Trick appeared and convinced them to allow Bo to live. His reasons not being clear at that time save to learn more about Bo.

The Ash next appeared in Faetal Attraction where he had to deal with a Light Fae Fury who had a mental breakdown over the death of her husband. Following the death of the Fury, he warns Bo that she is being watched by him. In Vexed, Lauren asked on the behalf of Bo for an audience with him. When Bo meets with him, he asks if Bo has chosen a side, which she had not. When he is asked to help a Fae named Lou Ann be freed under The Ash's influence as he knew she was innocent, he refuses to do so indicating that it is a Dark Fae affair, and how they handle their own is their business. It is also in this episode that it is explained that the necklace Lauren wears is The Ash's symbol and it signifies that Lauren is owned by The Ash. This causes strife between Bo and Lauren when Lauren goes to see Bo and accidentally reveals that she did so at the behest of The Ash to distract her from Vex, who Bo blames for framing Lou Ann for her crimes.

He next appeared in Faetal Justice to confront Trick when he protected Dyson] from the Dark Fae when he was accused of killing a Dark Fae by The Morrigan. He also warned Trick that his actions would have dire consequences for him, but Trick also warned The Ash that he should be sure about his own position in power before questioning that of others. The Ash also appears at the end of the episode to note that all charges against Dyson had been dropped and that he felt that a war was close in their future.

The final appearance of the Original Ash was in the First Season finale Blood Lines where he was either badly injured or killed when Aife, Bo's mother, staged an attack on the Light Fae council of Elders in order to trigger a war between the Light and Dark Fae. The attack killed most of the Elders and left the Ash on life support, resulting in a contest being declared to elect a New Ash. Through this contest, The New Ash, Lachlan was declared and took over the position of The Ash for the Second Season of the series.

Powers and Abilities

The powers and abilities of The Ash were never displayed in the series and have been questioned from his first appearance. However, according to information that was released by the show runners about this character, It was confirmed that the first Ash had the ability to control plant life, but what kind of Fae he was remained unclear. It was also revealed that there was originally a scene where Bo questioned The Ash's powers, and he choked Bo with the spores in the air, but it was cut from the series.

Upon the actions of Aife and the death or severe injury of The Ash, it was declared that the position of Ash was vacant and a contest was held to find a replacement. After a vote and a contest called the Stag Hunt, Lachlan was declared to be The New Ash. He held this position during the Second Season of the series but was killed by The Garuda and the position of Ash was vacant once more.

Character History

Second Season

Lachlan acted as The Ash, generally referred to as The New Ash, in the Second Season of the series. He was not Fae in nature, but was a Nāga and the enemy of The Garuda who he eventually lost his life to. When The Ash was either badly injured or killed by Aife, Bo's mother, a New Ash was declared as being needed and a representative of the Fae council, the Blackthorn, announced a contest to replace him apparently due to the Light Fae council's dissatisfaction with The Ash's actions. He first appeared in the Second Season episode I Fought the Fae (And the Fae Won) where he was involved in the competition for the position of The Ash which ended in his being the winner and proclaimed to be The New Ash. During his reign as Ash, Lachlan was very strict with rules and the position of Ash, enforcing his will over the Light Fae. During this time he enraged Bo over his treatment of Lauren and other humans that he owned. He was responsible for guiding Bo to the means to release Nadia, Lauren's girlfriend, from the curse she was under as well. He did however come to terms with Bo, eventually partnering with her against The Garuda.

Besides his numerous appearances in the Second Season, he was referenced in almost every episode between his first and last appearances. His final appearance in the series was in the second season episode, Lachlan's Gambit. In this episode, he was in a final confrontation with The Garuda and after a short battle was killed by it when his head was cut off. Upon Lachlan's death, the position of Ash was vacant once more, eventually filled by Hale in the Third Season as The Acting Ash.

Powers and Abilities

Lachlan was a Naga, but his precise abilities and powers were not made very clear in the series. It was seen at several points that he could transform his teeth and mouth causing sharp and jagged fangs to appear at will. It can be assumed that when this happened it was possible for him to strike like a snake and deliver his poison through his teeth. There was evidence of his having a total of five heads, four of which Bo discovered in a lock box that Lachlan held. It is unclear if Lachlan appeared with all of his heads at once, or if as each was cut off another appeared in its place. Lachlan did state that his fifth head was his last and if that was removed it would mean the end of his life. Lachlan's venom was one of the only substances that could kill The Garuda. Apparently his other heads were removed in order for the venom to be used in the past. It is unclear if this was to kill other Garuda or for other purposes. It was also shown in the series that Lachlan was very skilled at using a bow and a sword. He also was very manipulative, held strong opinions and did not have a very positive view of humanity as a whole.

Upon the death of Lachlan, the position of Ash was vacant. It is unclear how Hale was offered the position of Ash, but he accepted and served as Ash during the Third Season of the series. However, by the end of the season, The Morrigan forced Hale to vacate the position of Ash.

Character History

Third Season

Hale, proper name William Haley François Santiago, also known as Detective Hale, was The Ash, more commonly referred to as The New Ash during the Third Season of the series. Through the first two seasons of the series, Hale was Dyson's partner on the police force at the 39th Division but held a secret that he did not reveal for some time. Hale had a title in Fae society of a Baronet of noble blood as he was of Clan Zamora, which was his family's clan name. Hale ignored his political connections for the most part through the series until the Third Season when he was placed into the role of the The Acting Ash upon the death of Lachlan, the previous Ash. Hale believed that Fae should live with humanity as equals, but his family, notably his father Sturgis and his sister Val, did not agree with him.

According to Lachlan, Hale had a centuries old obligation to serve The Ash, but since becoming The Ash for a period of time it is unclear if this obligation still exists. Hale's family was one of the noble Fae families and had significant political importance in the Fae community at large. According to the past that Hale has spoken of in the series, there had been friction between himself and his father for many years. Some of this tension might have existed because his Father and sister were Pombero, which were apparently the natural enemy of Sirens. His sister, Val, in the past used her ability to mute sound to rob Hale of his voice during many of their arguments. Hale's mother was a Siren, but died sometime in the past before the series began.

During Hale's reign as Ash, he attempted to change how the office of Ash was seen by the Light Fae. He acted to benefit more of the poorer part of Fae society as much as possible, became more available to the Light Fae as a whole by making the Dal Riata the home of the Ash, and attempted to mend the relationship the Light Fae and Dark Fae had. One of his programs was to pair Dyson with Tamsin in an attempt to prove that the Light and Dark could work together for a common good. He also tried to create a good relationship with The Morrigan. but her ongoing feud with Bo made that impossible and he was forced to threaten The Morrigan's life should she not change her ways.

His reign as Ash was very short and in the third season finale Those Who Wander he lost his position as The Ash, saved Kenzi’s life, and helped Trick to escape from danger. He also made a deal with Vex to remove The Morrigan from her position with the Dark Fae in order to remove her as a threat to Fae peace. The implications of all of these actions are yet to be revealed in the series.

Powers and Abilities

Hale is a Siren and his powers are based on his voice. He can, as was shown in the episode Faetal Attraction use a simple whistle to control others. How this is done seems to be a combination of attraction to the sound he makes and possibly interfering with the ability of the person to think clearly when the sounds he makes overwhelms their senses. It has also been shown that he can duplicate musical notes exactly, cure hangovers, and cauterize a wound. It is unclear what exactly Hale's powers are as a whole, but they are all sound based in some way, shape or form. This includes having perfect pitch and the ability to recognize any note or sound. Besides his Siren abilities, Hale is an expert detective, is highly intelligent, and has experience with Fae politics through his family's position in Fae society.

The Future of The Ash

At the end of the Third Season, with the removal of Hale as The Acting Ash, the position of Ash, the leader of the Light Fae was vacant. It was unclear if Hale would return as Ash with the removal of The Morrigan from her position of power by Vex. With the current strife between the Light Fae and the Dark Fae and the chaos that had ensued, the position of Ash might not be held in the future. It is also possible, through the arrival of The Wanderer and the disappearance of Bo at the end of the Third Season, that Fae society may change as a result making the position of The Ash and The Morrigan irrelevant in the series going forwards in the Fourth Season.

Fourth Season

At the beginning of the Fourth Season, according to Hale, the position of Ash was vacant. The Una Mens had taken over the Ash's compound and were using it as their base of operations, a dungeon, and a place of interrogation. Trick was then summoned to face interrogation, but passed and was then declared to be The New Acting Ash.

Following the arrival of the Una Mens, they took over The Ash's compound and began to interrogate Fae. Eventually Trick was summoned to appear and faced an investigation of his life by them. Assuming they would discover be was the Blood King and force him to join them, Trick intended to kill himself and was prepared to do so. However the Una Mens instead decided that they would declare him the New Acting Ash and Trick accepted that position from them.

Character History

Fourth Season

Trick became the New Acting Ash at the end of the episode Let the Dark Times Roll after being interrogated by the Una Mens and passing their examination of him. They indicted that he was the only logical choice because of the respect Trick had from both the Light and Dark Fae. At the end of the episode he confirmed to Bo that he intended to pick up the mantel of the New Acting Ash, but it was not clear what would happen to the Dal Riata or where Trick would locate the office of The Ash. Through the season, Trick mentioned the role of New Acting Ash several times but was not actually seen acting in that role save for the occasional reference to doing so.

Fifth Season

Trick referenced in a conversation with Dyson that has was still the Acting Ash during When God Opens a Window... in order to impel Dyson's cooperation in investigating a case. Dyson had initially refused, saying his fealty was with Bo, but Trick used his position as the Acting Ash to force Dyson to change his mind.

Powers and Abilities

Trick is a Blood Sage which gives him the power to alter the world around him by using his blood and writing down what he desires which then becomes reality. There is a cost to using his powers and that generally means that a greater evil or darkness is unleashed. According to Trick, his powers only work when he writes in his blood of his own free will rather than being forced to do so. It also seems that he must be very specific in what he asks for, needing to write every detail of what he wants to occur, or it might be interpreted wrongly. Beyond Trick's Fae powers, he is well versed in Fae history, myths and legends. He owns or has access to a vast collection of books, scrolls, and various items of power which he keeps in his lair located under the Dal Riata bar which he owns. Trick's formal role is as the way-keeper of the only neutral Fae ground in the city and all Fae appear there when they arrive in the city to check in with him. As part of that role, Trick also is well versed in the art of bar-keeping as well.
