Plot
Short Summary
It is three weeks after the defeat of The Garuda and Bo is out of control breaking many Fae laws and going on a rampage through the city. She is arrested by Dyson and sent to jail for her actions. However, this is a ruse to investigate the Fae prison that is run by Amazons and the Fae warden running it with Lauren as backup as the prison doctor. Hale, in the meantime, is revealed to be the new acting Ash. Vex appears with information about what is going on and attempts to convince Dyson to take him on in the place of Hale, but Dyson refuses. Bo breaks into the warden's office looking for evidence and discovers that the Amazon warden is forcing other rare Fae to bear children against their will at a highly accelerated rate so she can sell them. Helping a prisoner Bo befriended to give birth, Lauren loses her cover and Bo's deception is revealed to the warden and her guards as they arrive to claim the child. The warden then reveals her plan to force Bo to give birth to a new succubus. However, the warden is revealed as being male, being the one causing the accelerated births, and the Amazons turn on him freeing Bo and Lauren. Bo then asks Lauren to be with her, the two to be a couple, as Dyson and Kenzi arrive to help them. At the and of the episode, Hale shuts down the prison and those prisoners that were not violent are released. Bo talks to Trick about her father being most certainly Dark Fae but Trick tells her that she is not a monster. As she leaves the Dal Riata, Bo attacks a man and takes his Chi, leaving him unconscious as she walks away with an evil smile on her lips.
Detailed Summary
The episode opens with a pair of police cars arriving at a bank as Bo (Anna Silk) leaves from a back door carrying a bag stuffed with money. She walks down an alley, but a pair of thugs confront her looking to take the money from her. She is cut by one of them on her cheek and is enraged over this, quickly knocking them both unconscious. She leaves the alleyway and walks past a club where three men are being told by a bouncer that they were never getting inside. She pauses and then begins to point at individuals there saying as she does: “Eeny, meeny, miny...” Then grabs the bouncer with the word “Bo’s” before draining him of some of his Chi to heal the cut on her cheek. Then Bo throws him aside before tossing the money she took from the bank into the air.
Bo then runs down another alleyway, being chased by someone, before running into the Dal Riata with Dyson (Kristen Holden-Reid) following immediately behind her. He tells her to give up and surrender, but she taunts him and then attempts to escape again as Vex (Paul Amos) watches from another part of the room. Dyson then asks Bo if there is any Fae law that she hasn’t broken in the past three weeks. Bo’s answer is that she’s having fun as Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) rushes in and demands to know what Bo has done but Vex stops her cold as Bo and Dyson continue to fight together. Dyson wins the fight and Vex releases Kenzi moments later. Dyson tells Bo that her crime spree is over as he arrests her. Bo asks Trick (Rick Howland) if she should ask for sanctuary again, but he refuses her saying that he doesn’t know who she is anymore. Bo turns and with an insane look in her eyes says: “I’m Bo bitches and I’ll be back.”
After the opening credits we find Bo being checked into prison. The guards make a record of what she is carrying which include a pair of earrings that were reported stolen, a gold woman’s watch which they note was also probably stolen, and a sex toy which Bo declares as being hers. One guard completes the procedure by saying: “Thus lists the personal possessions of Bo Dennis, lineage unknown, genus succubi.” When Bo asks if she wants an autograph, the answer is no one cares. Bo then asks about “the peanut gallery” standing one level above and watching her to which the answer is they like to watch the new girls go through decontamination.
Bo next finds herself under a cold shower as guards stand around and watch her which then leads to her being escorted through a cell block to her cell. At the cell, she tries to use her powers on the female guard, but they have no effect. She then enters the cell and meets her cellmate Sylvie. Sylvie asks Bo if she is innocent, but Bo just confirms that she did all of the things that she is accused of. Bo asks Sylvie what she did and she stole some bread to feed her starving family. She then tells Bo that her mother warned her that she would send her to Henaba prison and now that she is there, the letters she writes to her mother aren’t even opened. Bo looks through the letters and comments: “I barely knew my mom, though she did sleep with my boyfriend and try to kill me.” When asked if she has any kin outside, Bo’s answer is she has friends that are more than family, or at least she did once. Bo learns that the guards are all Amazons, Silvie adding they are all very anti-male in nature refusing to take orders from them. Bo asks about orders from the New Ash, and is told that they especially do not obey his words. Bo also learns that once every five years they do pick males, breed with them and then keep the female offspring abandoning the males in the forests. A guard then takes Bo away on what is called a work detail.
Bo is taken to the infirmary where it is revealed that Lauren (Zoie Palmer) is the prison doctor who sends the guard away. They have a conversation where it is revealed that Bo did not in fact turn bad, but was playing a role for some purpose. Bo asks why Lauren smells so bad and the answer is she poured the smell of a Skunk Ape on herself to pass as a Fae and Bo is very impressed with Lauren for figuring out that plan to hide she is human. Bo reveals next that the plan was to go undercover to investigate the corrupt prison and to find out what the Warden is up to, and to explain why the previous prison doctor, Lauren’s mentor, Dr. Evert, is missing. Lauren then gives Bo a piece telling her to keep it with her at all times. Bo makes the joke that having a “rock” so early in their relationship is a sign of commitment. Lauren teases back the question “Are we in a relationship?” as the Warden arrives with some guards. The Warden muses over Bo being a “rare Fae succubus” before telling Lauren that she is taking Bo away to other duties, mainly cleaning the Warden’s office. As she leaves, Bo says to Lauren: “See you later stinky” and Lauren sighs that she hopes this works.
Going back to the Dal Riata, Trick tries to stop Kenzi as she frets over the position Bo is in saying that she is going to a meeting. Opening a door to one of the tavern’s back rooms she calls out that “you need to fix this, you’re the Ash now.” Hale (K.C. Collins) then appears and replies: “Yes little mama, I am.”
Returning from commercial, Kenzi is in a funk complaining to both Hale and Trick that their plan of Bo pretending to go rouge was stupid. Dyson tries to tell Kenzi that Bo did well at that, but she doesn’t care because Bo has no one to protect her except Lauren. Hale defends Lauren saying that she can defend herself. Kenzi wonders if Lauren will “science people to death” as her way of helping Bo. Trick then says that Lauren is good in a crisis and Kenzi freaks out further as Dyson just shakes his head over what Trick said. Kenzi asks Hale again as the Ash to get Bo out of prison, Trick correcting her that Hale is the Acting Ash, not The Ash. Hale explains that the Amazons will not listen to him, Kenzi commenting: “Why? Because of your stupid penis?”
Hale and Trick explain that Hale needs to have some kind of show to prove he can be the Ash and using the investigation of the prison would do so in the eyes of the Elders. Kenzi starts to tell them both off but then is confused about the prison being built on “get laid lines.” Trick explains that they are Ley Lines and are there to remove the powers of any Fae that is in the prison. This only upsets Kenzi further, but Dyson reveals that Lauren gave Bo a sarsen stone which will protect her as long as she possesses it. When Hale explains further that the guards also carry these stones, Trick tells Hale to be careful what he says as anyone could be listening.
This confuses Hale who says that Trick told him the room they were using was impenetrable. Trick’s answer is that it was available and Hale wanted to be closer to the people so this is what he got for doing so. Kenzi then says the Dal was so secure that Al Capone couldn’t get in, and also mentions how stale the place is. Trick’s answer is to start talking to Kenzi in 1930’s slang which only drives her crazier still over the situation. Dyson calls Kenzi over and tells her that Bo has faced things worse than where she is and she can handle it. Kenzi pouts and whines that she misses Bo and Dyson tells Kenzi that he does as well before hugging her.
The scene then changes to find Bo on her hands and knees wearing very little as she is scrubbing a floor with a toothbrush with the Warden looking on making suggestive comments about Bo. A guard then arrives carrying a case and the Warden directs them to her office, entry using an eye scanner. Inside the office the case is opened revealing a container of some kind within it, the guard asking if the "subject" is ready, the Warden's answer is soon. When the guard questions the Warden about how long she will continue her plans, the Warden strikes out and warns the guard that disobeying her would be unwise. Bo then meets Sylvie and they walk through the general prison population, Sylvie pointing out certain prisoners that Bo should be aware of, one of them being Jobina who works in the infirmary with Lauren. Then Sylvie sees a prisoner being escorted by, telling Bo that she knows her, calling her Maeve, and that she thought she had made it outside. Bo asks if prisoner return often and Sylvie tells Bo they do, but she's planning to be the exception to the rule in three days when she gets out. She also tells Bo that the only way people leave Heckuba is in a body bag. One of the guards then grabs Sylvie by the air and begins to abuse her until Bo steps in and challenges the guard. At first the guard beats Bo, but then Bo turns the tables on her and feeds from her, which is something that shouldn't be possible in the prison and is seen by everyone that is watching the fight. Bo is pulled off by another guard and then is taken away to the Warden's office, but she never arrives there. Instead she is brought to the showers, sprayed by a fire hose and then the Warden searches her, eventually finding the stone on her that Lauren provided. After taking the stone, Bo attempts to use her powers on the Warden, but fails because the stone no longer is protecting her. She is then attacked by many guards and severely beaten.
After another commercial break, Bo is crawling on the floor injured from the beating and Lauren finds her. Lauren asks what happened and Bo tells her that she couldn't stand by and watch Sylvie being beaten. Lauren agrees saying, "That's not your style." Bo then tells Lauren that she wants Hale to get Lauren out before the Warden figures out that Lauren is the one helping her. Lauren refuses and shows Bo some files she found in a secret compartment in Dr. Evert's desk. The notes indicate that Dr. Evert had been injecting rare Fae prisoners with a "super vitamin cocktail." Lauren tells Bo that half of the prisoners she cannot track down and the other half reoffended and came back to prison completely broken. Lauren makes the point that the woman Sylvie knows, Maeve will not speak. Lauren comes to the conclusion that the injections must contain something that makes the prisoners more violent or more likely to commit crimes. but Lauren cannot understand why Dr. Every would do such a thing. Bo tells Lauren that not everything is black or white, there is also grey. Lauren then tells Bo that she wishes she could make a clear choice about one thing before saying that the smell she is wearing is jacking up her hormones. Bo then tells Lauren that she does get it and that Lauren deserves more. Lauren pushes that aside saying that she has to find out what happened to Dr. Evert. Bo replies that they have to move faster, and is told that Dyson is working through Hale to have medical supplies brought in. At Bo's comment that Dyson is good, Lauren's comment is that she could do better.
Dyson is at the police station as Vex enters and begins to talk loudly about Dyson working with humans and being undercover there. Dyson warns Vex that if he breaks his cover he will cut Vex's "balls off and sell them to a certain butcher we both know." Dyson looks at Vex who's arm is in a sling and wonders why The Morrigan doesn't want her broken little toy back. Vex replies what Dyson is going to do for a partner now that Hale is the acting Ash. When Dyson says that he works better alone, Vex reveals that he is aware of the prison case, that there is no record of any of the released prisoners reentering Fae society and that they just disappear. Then Dyson is told there is a call for him about a prison doctor as Vex leaves telling Dyson to put in a good word for him at the station. Plus, he has his own uniform already.
Bo returns to her cell, Sylvie already there waiting for her. Sylvie thanks Bo for taking the beating for her and tells Bo to keep low. Bo wishes her well on the outside and Sylvie tells her that whatever people say about her, she knows that Bo isn't all bad. Bo makes her promise never to return and Sylvie tells Bo that she is never coming back as she is taken away leaving Bo alone in the cell.
Kenzi is at the Dal Riata waiting as Dyson arrives carrying an envelope. Kenzi opens it and Dyson tells her that he wishes that he was going with her as protection. She asks Dyson how he is feeling and he tells Kenzi that he feels better and probably better than The Norn. He asks Kenzi what she did and all Kenzi tells him is that she did what she had to do. Kenzi asks him if he will ever tell Bo he has his love for her back and Dyson tells Kenzi he is still trying to figure that part out, Kenzi warns him that someone else might snap Bo up referring to Lauren, telling him to think about it.
The next scene has Kenzi arriving at the prison claiming to be Bo's human pet so that she can see her identifying herself as Kenzi Von Clare and looking very much like a hooker. When Bo sees her, the first thing she says is: "You wore your redneck wig." Kenzi's answer is: "and my monster truck thong. Go method or go home." She asks if anyone is buying Lauren being a doctor, Bo reminds her that Lauren is a doctor, and then Kenzi asks when Bo is coming home saying that she has to cut the crusts off her own sandwiches and that Vex says her Sponge Bob impression is weak. Bo can't help but laugh at this and tells Kenzi that she really is missing her and that she didn't really understand how much until that moment. Kenzi takes a piece of gum out of her mouth and sticks it to the bottom of the table they are at as Bo asks about the rash that Kenzi has, Kenzi claiming that she has and it will be fine. Then Kenzi crawls over the top of the table and kisses Bo deeply before the guards break the two of them up, Kenzi kicking and screaming as she is taken away. Bo remains at the table watching her go and then removes something from inside of her mouth and with a smile says: "Love you too Kenz."
Bo returns to scrubbing the floor of the Warden's office with a toothbrush in the next scene, a guard watching her as she does so. Bo tells the guard she is almost done and the guard leaves to check on something. After she leaves, Bo places a contact lens in one of her eyes and then goes to the Warden's door and places her eye against the scanner making the door open for her. Once inside, Bo searches for clues before noticing a large emblem on one wall of the prison's shield, discovering that it holds another eye scanner that is the trigger for a hidden door that leads to another room behind the Warden's office. Searching there, she discovers more of the containers seen earlier in the episode which were in the possession of the Warden. Beyond that is a door marked Solitary Confinement and Bo continues on to discover a hidden area in the prison where she discovers another container that has never been opened and a living space where to her surprise she finds Sylvie there. And she is in a very advanced stage of pregnancy.
Another commercial and Bo asks Sylvie what happened. She answers that she woke up with her "own apartment and a bun in the oven." When Bo tells Sylvie that they can't stay there, Sylvie says that she has to be good because she doesn't want to go back to prison. She also tells Bo that "they" are going to take away her baby and that they are "always watching" as she looks at a curtain. Bo goes over and opens it to discover that there is a nursery on the other side with many cameras there watching what it going on and Bo sighs with the comment: "Just when I think I have seen all things Fae" before Sylvie closes the curtain again. Sylvie asks Bo to promise her that she will not let them take her baby and Bo makes that promise guiding Sylvie to leave. When Sylvie asks what if they see them, Bo replies: "a giant pregnant lady and a succubus in a red jumpsuit? I doubt they'll ever notice." But as they try to leave, Sylvie's water breaks with a splash and Bo begins to panic as Sylvie goes into labour but realizes that she does have some help they can use.
Bo takes Sylvie to Lauren at the infirmary when she and Lauren learn that Sylvie is a Wamblee, which Lauren thought were extinct. Lauren then begins to remove all of her clothing explaining that the scent of the Skunk Ape she is wearing to hide herself, if the newborn smelled it, would make it blow up in size and that would likely cause Sylvie's death. As a result, Lauren strips off her clothing and washes to remove the scent. Bo tries to stop her, saying that it will reveal she is human, but Lauren tells Bo that she knows that Bo will protect her and she has to protect the child.
Dyson is still at the police station as Vex arrives with Kenzi in tow, Vex in a fetish policeman's costume, Kenzi just looking miffed. Kenzi tells Dyson that Hale wants a meeting about what's going on and then sees the pictures that Dyson was looking at. She discovers, thanks to Vex blurting it out, that they are images of the remains of Dr. Evert. Kenzi goes into a panic and rushes off with to see Hale with Dyson and Vex following in her wake.
Meanwhile, Lauren has changed and now is safe to deliver the baby, she is confused however in how Sylvie could be ready for birth in only a week and has no answer to why that is. When Lauren goes to help Sylvie, Sylvie is shocked that Lauren is human and Jobina just smiles saying that she knew Lauren was too pretty to be a Skunk Ape.
Questions in this Episode
- How did Hale become the acting Ash? Was this some kind of reward for his part in defeating the Garuda? Or was it connected to his being in second place when Lachlan won the contest to become The Ash?
- As Hale is the Ash now, what happens to his role in the police? Is he on sick leave or something?
- Why is Vex not with The Morrigan anymore? What happened? It is all because of the events leading up to the defeat of The Garuda or is something else going on?
- It is unclear if Bo is actually changing in personality or otherwise in this episode. Her actions at the beginning of the episode are described as role-playing. The events at the end of the episode make it clear that something is going on with her. What that may be is unclear.
Answers in this Episode
- Based on the comment that Bo's rampage had been going on for three weeks, it is likely that the events of the last episode happened shortly before this episode does. A little longer than three weeks, but how long is not clear.
- When Bo was checked into prison, her name was stated as being Bo Dennis. While this is her human name, and likely used for legal purposes, it is also possible that since the entire event was a set-up that this was used for convenience sake and it is not her true name.
- Fae prisons are built on top of ley lines which take away the power of any Fae that is within their walls save for those that possess a sarsen stone made of stone similar to that of Stonehenge.
- The prison is called Hecuba Prison, but this really does not have a connection to the myths of Amazons. It does have a connection to Greek mythology in name only.
- Amazons refer to this myth. In the Lost Girl universe they are very strong warrior Fae who are led by a Queen and in many cases operate the Fae prisons.
- A Skunk Ape is a hominid cryptid said to inhabit the Southern United States, from places such as North Carolina and Arkansas, although reports from Florida are most common. It is named for its appearance and for the unpleasant odor that is said to accompany it. According to the United States National Park Service, the Skunk Ape exists only as a local myth. Reports of the Skunk Ape were particularly common in the 1960s and 1970s. In the fall of 1974, numerous sightings were reported in suburban neighborhoods of Dade County, Florida, of a large, ugly-smelling, hairy, ape-like creature, which ran upright on two legs. In the Lost Girl universe, little is known of Skunk Apes save that, according to the events of this episode, that secretions from this kind of Fae have the capacity to make a human pass as Fae.
- It appears that Vex is at odds with The Morrigan at the time of this episode and is suffering from a broken arm at the beginning of the episode. He seeks to become Dyson's new partner as Hale is now the Ash.
- Kenzi uses the name Kenzi Von Clare to identify herself, but this is most likely another of her many false names in the series.
- One of the ongoing gags in the series is about toothbrushes. Bo uses one to scrub the floor in this episode.
- A Wamblee in Indian mythology is an eagle ('wamblee') which is the tangible representation of Wakan Tanka, the Great Bird of Thunder, who gives the sun's rays and is the manifestation of the Great Spirit, the supreme deity. In the Lost Girl universe, Wamblees are extremely rare North American Fae with highly-developed olfactory senses. If newborn Wamblees smell the essence of a Skunk Ape they would expand in size as a defence mechanism. Newborns have a resemblance to birds because of their plumage which remains until their first molting.
- Sylvie names her son Bo.
- Lauren reveals that she has always liked the name Ethan for a boy and Charlotte for a girl.
