Plot

Short Summary

Bo accidentally activates a game that is part of her tests for The Dawning. Bo and Tamsin are forced into helping a Spriggan to find a missing Fae. As Bo is involved in that search, Trick is forced to play the game for Bo. Each choice Trick makes affects Bo at some point in her search. Bo and Tamsin go to Brazenwood, a place where outlaw Fae live and find the missing Fae who is a Squonk and free her. Lauren wins an award for her work and wants Bo to go with her, instead going out with a fellow scientist when Bo cannot do so. Bo passes her test and receives an invitation to attend The Dawning and Tamsin has a disturbing revelation about Bo.

Detailed Summary

The episode opens with Bo (Anna Silk) blindfolded and stumbling through the Dal Riata with Stella (Deborah Odell) watching as she searches for a cricket that can be heard in the background. Stella asks Bo if she wants to find the Zambi cricket of good fortune as she bumps her shins for the umpteenth time. Bo continues to search, complaining that the sound of the cricket is bouncing off the walls around her and Stella's only help is to tell Bo that she is "warmer." They enter another room where Trick (Richard Howland) is looking around in amazement at what Hale (K. C. Collins) did to the room he has been using commenting that: "Hale went full speak-easy. Ridiculous." Stella tells Trick to be quiet as Bo stumbles past him. Bo suddenly stops and Stella tells her to concentrate before Bo ducks down and grabs at something. Standing up again she gleefully cries out "Gotcha!" but opens her hand to find that she has not captured the cricket.

Stella disappointedly tells Bo that the cricket had been behind her the entire time she had been searching for it as she scoops the cricket into a small box and takes it away telling Bo that this had been her last chance to "secure the cricket's good fortune. Something you desperately need for The Dawning and you failed Bo." Trick comments that Stella is being harsh and she snaps at him before walking away in a huff. Bo crumples into a chair and tells Trick that she wishes Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) was there. Trick reminds Bo that Stella told her that "humans taint this part of the process." Bo tells Trick that she will never make it through but he tries to tell her that she is speaking nonsense. Trick adds that The Dawning "is not all horror shows and near death experiences and it is something we all go through." Bo recites what Trick has said and adds "and it is manageable." Trick is pleased that Bo has been listening to what he has been telling her. Bo tells of Hale having to drink seven pints of sour Lochness and that Dyson had to suffer through fleas. Bo agrees that she does have a chance and her mood becomes slightly better. Stella returns and Bo asks what she must do next, but is told that she must be given the invitation to enter the temple and now she must wait until that happens. Bo asks: "Please tell me that means sitting on my tired little ass." Stella's answer is: "The day is yours" which makes Bo happy and she rushes off. Stella apologizes to Trick for her outburst earlier in the episode and offers to take him to dinner which Trick manages to agree to in surprise. As she turns away and leaves, she adds: "Wear something nice."

Elsewhere in the Dal Riata, Bo answers a phone call from Lauren (Zoie Palmer). As she speaks with Lauren, Bo sees an odd machine sitting on a table and walks over to it. Idly, as she continues to talk to Lauren, Bo plays with some of the parts of the machine before turning a crank several times. After finishing her call with Lauren she walks away. but as she does so the device begins to make noise and then unfolds as it activates. The scene then switches to a young girl somewhere else sitting and crying with some kind of device on her face as she does so.

After the opening credits, we return to the Dal Riata where Bo is getting ready to leave. Someone sneaks up behind her and covers her eyes and Bo calls out: "If you are a cricket I will totally kill you." It is revealed to be Lauren who is massively excited about something. Lauren asks Bo how things went and starts talking to her incredibly fast and being very hyperactive. Bo is taken aback and asks: "Are you on crack?" Lauren then shows Bo a letter in which Lauren has been given an award for her work and the banquet is that evening. Lauren admits that she wasn't their first choice but the other person is a fraud and they caught him in one. Lauren is beside herself and asks Bo if she will be Lauren's "plus one" and Bo agrees to do so. Bo tells Lauren to "go home and crack some bubbly" and Lauren rushes off in a panic as she tries to figure out what she will wear, what speech she will make and worries that Bo needs a dress as well. As Lauren rushes away, Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) appears and comments that Bo and Lauren look "cute" together. Tamsin then tells Bo that she is taking her out to lunch. When Bo asks why, Tamsin tells Bo that everyone has been lying to her.

The scene switches to a Dark Fae bar where Tamsin and Bo are sitting down at a table together.

Questions in this Episode

  • Bo posed a question to Kenzi at the end of the previous episode There's Bo Place Like Home trying to find out why Kenzi went to see The Norn. In this episode, we are told that Kenzi isn't there because Stella told Bo that "humans taint this part of the process." This still does not resolve the cliffhanger at the end of the last episode, nor does Bo's reaction hint at what happened. As well, if humans taint this part of the process, how is it that Lauren could arrive, talk to Bo, and make arrangements to go with her to the awards ceremony? None of this makes any sense.

Answers in this Episode

  • The Zambi cricket of good fortune refers to the Gryllotalpa africanus cricket which in Zambia is held to bring good fortune to anyone who sees it.
  • During their Dawning, Hale had to drink seven pints of sour Lochness and Dyson had to suffer through fleas.
  • In order to enter the Temple of The Dawning, an invitation to enter the temple must be given, but the time and place of that is not in the control of the one facing The Dawning and they must wait until that happens before they can progress.
