Plot Summary
After losing her life in a shootout with a rival gang, she was reincarnated into the body of Mhyrsha, the succubus that was the first boss of a video game. However, by a lucky twist of fate, she found the Hero, fresh at the start of his journey, and killed him, before he could come and kill her! Problem done, right? Now she can live in peace?
Well, not so much. Mhyrsha's plans from before she woke up in this body are still in motion. There's a ritual of 'false immortality' she needs to complete, and the bandits she hired to collect the ritual's 'components' still need to be silenced, to keep anyone from chasing after her. But that's not the only thing.
Mhyrsha is also Baroness Alis Pureheart, the ruler of the local area, and she has to act like it, or even more people will be suspicious. The only thing she can do is try and tie up the loose ends, and hope that she can do it in a way that makes her seem completely beyond reproach. After all, the Voice of the World said that another Hero took up the mantle when she killed the first one, so there's still danger out there, right?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on July 28, 2024
If there is one thing that Mhyrsha is good at, it’s scheming. It’s almost second nature to her and so she just has to. A scheme for this, a scheme for that and along the way some of them might backfire on her. But that’s the risk you take when scheming and if things don’t go right, well there’s always another scheme isn’t there?
Continuing on a short time after the prior work, the story follows the main character Mhyrsha and her schemes, but it places more emphasis on the events that come out of those schemes and the complications that result. It’s more focused on setting up future encounters and events than on Mhyrsha overall, though she carries much of the story before it turns to the aftermath of her actions.
Mhyrsha is very much self-absorbed and a lot of time with her is spent going over her stats and new abilities which, honestly, became very tedious. She’s less of a succubus than she is becoming a villain or evil force as a whole.
It’s a shame really as in this being her focus in this part of the series, she’s really not that interesting and she really needed to be. Some of the scenes beyond the scheming have their moments however and perhaps that will lead to better storytelling in the future of the series.
As a whole, much like the first work in the series, it needs to figure out what is more important. The stats seem to be more so here and they really shouldn’t be. The story is interesting, but the stats keep taking me out of enjoying the story and that’s a real problem.
There’s too little of a succubus theme in this part of the series, being that it’s focused on setting up future events, plots and of course, schemes. Overall I really wish there would be less stats and interruptions of the story, given that it is interesting at times. There’s something here overall that does keep my interest, but it’s waning a bit.
Two out of five pitchforks.
Perhaps the next work in the series will bring something more to Mhyrsha as a character, not in her stats alone. Her scheming is a delight and as a character she’s really very unique. Perhaps more focus on her as a succubus would help me to enjoy the story and try to ignore the stat blocks that keep interrupting things.
