Plot Summary

Mhyrsha, the former First Boss (now Roaming Boss and Hero Slayer) managed to not only complete the Profane Master’s Unholy Transfiguration of Fate, a ritual that granted her 11 extra lives for the low, low cost of sacrificing twelve virgins in an unholy ritual. Even better, she managed to take her party and track down the bandits who rounded up the virgins for her, and silenced them with the help of another party of adventurers, 'proving' that she (as Baroness Alis Pureheart) was beyond reproach, and was working for the good of her people.

Unfortunately, that pesky mention of a new Hero after she killed the last one has come back and bitten her on the ass. Turned out that goblins could be Heroes, too, and a Goblin Lord got the title. Worse yet, the goblins are set to raid the village of Stonebreak in her domain! Now, she has to round up the barony's forces, and march to the village's aid. But will they be enough? And will she be able to kill another Hero without revealing her succubus nature?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on December 8, 2024

No good deed goes without another good deed needing to be done. Mhyrsha has her own goals, but there’s a problem over the horizon and everyone is looking to her. What else can she do other than fight for what she’s worked for. The problem is, that fight might be more than she was ready for.

Following from the second work in the series, the main focus is the preparations for a battle, the battle itself, and the rather surprising outcome. Mhyrsha takes on the role she’s crafted and leads those around her and that’s actually an interesting story in itself. The building of tension, the results of the battle, and what it means to Mhyrsha herself are more interesting than I expected at the start.

With that said, there’s not one point in this part of the series where Mhyrsha’s succubus nature comes out. Being that’s what I am invested in, it was a little disappointing. Still, she had some character development which kept my interest. But she’s seemingly moved on from her succubus nature and I rather miss that aspect of her.

Two out of five pitchforks.

How things ends was very much unexpected and offers something of a pattern, or quest, for Mhyrsha gong forwards. If that becomes the central plot of the series, I expect her being a succubus to fade out and become meaningless. I hope not, some of those moments were delightful. I’m expecting a twist in the tale in the next book, we’ll see if that happens and if Mhyrsha’s nature comes back once more.
