Plot Summary
Pikx the Violator, Goblin Lord and Hero, has been slain. Mhyrsha, in her guise as Baroness Pureheart, was able to take down the goblin without revealing too many of her secrets. However, just because the battle has been won does not mean things have come to an end. There's still the cleanup to deal with, a butcher's bill to address, and the small matter of loot from a Goblin Lord.
Fortunately, Alis Pureheart is the heroine of the hour (even if the Voice of the World calls her things like Executioner and Hero Slayer), so there isn't much she has to do, other than authorize the victory feast, and make sure that everyone buys her cover story about why her abilities were boosted during the fight. Of course, there's still threats in the wider world. Demon kings, inquisitors, and even just dungeon bosses that might prove problematic. But, for now, Mhyrsha can take a breath, and relax. Right?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 13, 2025
Life just can’t be simple for Mhyrsha no matter how she tries to get herself back into the shadows and out of the limelight. But she’s gotten herself into this mess and she’ll have to bear the brunt of the responsibility for herself and those around her. Still, the game is far from over and there’s always another challenge waiting to tap Mhyrsha on the shoulder. Hopefully her luck doesn’t run out at the worse moment.
Continuing from the third work in the series, the main focus is what happened in the aftermath of the battle she was involved in, the new aspects of her life that she has to come to terms with, and, of course, the appearance of the next problem on her horizon and trying to figure out a way to deal with that. With all of that complicating things, once more Mhyrsha’s succubus aspects fall into the background, are barely touched on, and really don’t seem to matter all that much.
It’s far more a fantasy adventure with a character who is a succubus than a story about a succubus character. That’s a distinction that matters because as thing are in this part of the series, Mhyrsha being a succubus really means little and if she wasn’t a succubus, she could be in the same place in the story, There should be a point to her being a succubus, whether by complication, need or power, and that just doesn’t come into play when it really could have and made the story a lot more complicated and interesting to see what happens next.
Two out of five pitchforks.
The ending of this part of the series offers a glimpse of future problems and complications, which is interesting. There is a path for the series to make Mhyrsha a bit more true to her nature and do something with that. It would be a refreshing change as a whole as what is happening otherwise is a narrative of description with little in the way of action or development. I really want to see more of that and a lot less of the statistics.
